A '77 engine number should read: 6 2 7 0001
6 = 6 cyl 2 = 911S - USA 7 = 1977 0001 = Sequential build numbers

This is a VIN, not an engine number. This particular VIN belongs to a 1973 911 RSR 2.8 that Loos & Jurgen Barth took 10th overall at the 9-10 June 1973 LeMans 24-hour (#63) among other races. ![]() Where did you see this number? ![]() Best, Grady

The VIN 9117212542 decodes as: 911 = Vehicle type 911. 7 = Model year 1977. 2 = Engine type 911S USA, 2.7l. 1 = Targa Body. 2542 = Consecutive serial number. (Range built: 9117210001 to 9117212747.) This USA version had only one basic engine type. There are two official types: For manual transmission: 911/85. For Sportomatic transmission: 911/90. These are identical except for the Sportomatic pieces. Pete Z. is right on (naturally). The engine number should be of the form: 627xxxx or 6279yyy where: 6 = Unit type 6-cylinder engine. 2 = Engine type 911S USA. 7 = Model year 1977. xxxx = Consecutive serial number. or 6 = Unit type 6-cylinder engine. 2 = Engine type 911S USA. 7 = Model year 1977. 9 = Engine for Sportomatic. yyy = Consecutive serial number. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/porsche-911-technical-forum/579552-76-911-what-smog-equipment-calif.html Post #18 has an image of what a ’77 911S USA engine should look like. Best, Grady

Toby/Grady I also saw that Vin (9113600847) advertised too, and got very excited, but alas, it's a 68t updated to look like a RSR

Damon,
Sharp eyes. Pursue the advertisement. See where the number came from. Not much is known about that RSR. It DNF (piston) with Pesch/Loos/Barth (#72) at the ’74 LeMans and supposedly was ‘restored’ by Gunner Porsche (Florida), perhaps later that year. Nothing since. It must be somewhere. Was it used as a ‘model’ for the ‘68T and the real VIN accidently slipped into the ad? Best, Grady

Miguel, my educated guess is that they do match, but only a COA from PCNA would prove it.
5135243 should start with a 6 What is the original paint code?

Recheck your engine number. The first digit has to be a 6. The 6 stands for 6 cylinders. Assuming all the other numbers are correct, the Vin and engine numbers match for a 73 911T Targa with CIS fuel injection.

If it's ok I'd like to tag onto the thread. I'm new to the forum so I'm mot sure where most of this info resides. Sounds like there's many on these responses that do. Looking for help decoding the info on my car.
