78 SC egr system
I am having a hard time finding the complete egr system that the PO removed over 12 years ago. I can't find any listings new or old anywhere. Even the muffler with the fitting for the egr filter is not available. Do I just drill a hole in the muffler that I have and weld a fitting on it? I found a used parts dealer that will sell me the egr, bracket, two pipes and egr filter for $600 bucks . I think this is my only option

Why do you want this?
Do you have that type of exhaust manifolds? My 78 did not have an EGR system. |

i agree with rattlsnak
your car shouldnt of had thermo reactors, when you said egr i assumed you ment air injection, what i ahve is a smog pump brackets and i think a rail or spider that injects air into your heads. you really dont want to stay with this system as those reactors if you have them are sheer death to your motor. ed

EGR (exhaust gas recirculation ) system is required to pass smog in California for 1978 and 1979 . I have the air injection system already. The previous owner removed the egr system and threw it away. The car has not been driven since 1995. The smog test were easier then. A lot of cheating was going on then too.

but the parts shown above are for a thermo reactor type exhust. you may indeed need a EGR system but just double check which system you are running before you buy parts. i think you can change this type of system out for normal exchangers and a cat and be way better off. that is what we do and alaska fallows cali. guidlines. sorry to lead you astray on the parts i thought i had, ed

Is it failing the visual inspection or something? And as Ed asked, do you have the correct exhaust and muffler? I have never seen a 78 with an EGR system is why I ask, but of course I dont live in CA either.

Not sure if its the same part, but I have the EGR filter and some plumbing that I just pulled off my '79 turbo. Yours for cost of shipping if it will help you get passed CA emissions testing.

The smog check involves both visual and functual tests. The way to test the EGR system is to apply vacuum to the valve which should cause the engine rpm to drop. This would indicate a properly operating system.

Dont know much about Ca. emissions but are you telling me they actually hook up a vacuum pump and test the egr system? And I cant believe anybody would not miss it on a visual especially if you have the air injection system working.

They have to actually see the valve and connect the hand vacuum pump to it. I know it tough out here . The state will send undercover agents with cars with missing emision components to see if they can catch the smog technician off guard.

Take a look at this thread:
http://forums.pelicanparts.com/showthread.php?t=457301 Scroll down to post #8 and there is a photo of the exhaust system I pulled off. You can see the EGR filter. I also have the hard line that goes from that filter, up through the tin to the EGR valve. I do not have the EGR valve, and the end of the piping that goes to the valve has been crimped off. These are the only parts left of my EGR system. Send me a PM if you want this stuff.

Thanks for the help and offers guys. I found out yesterday when I visited a local Porsche shop that the system that I displayed is from a 1977 and is different. The 79 turbo system is different too. ( thanks anyway jwasbury ). I found an egr on ebay for 39 bucks. The guy at the Porsche shop says he can find the rest of the parts that I need. Thanks again guys.
