Modifying Stock Muffler on 84 w/o cutting the valance??

I hear a lot of pros about modifying the stock muffler to get a little better sound and flow. I am interested in this idea, but I don't want to cut my valance for the second outlet. Can anyone provide any feedback on what they have done when modifying the stock muffler but opted to not cut the valance? I am thinking of mounting the second outlet so it just barely protrudes from under the valance so that it was not visibly obvious. Any thoughts/feedback/advice?

When I expressed this thought to Ben (M&K Mufflers) concerning the thought that an early M&K 1-in-1-out was a little too tame, he brought up the idea of modifying my muffler with a right side exit pipe that wouldn't be visible because I too, didn't want to cut the valence. I would also have the option of capping the right side if I wanted a quieter exhaust for something like a longer trip. Seemed like a good idea and I would have done it, but I ended up backdating the system with SSIs which seemed to take care of the "tame" factor.

I have a tip that points down and some here have told me it looks stupid.

Anyway, here's how you'd do it on the right side:

I'm not finished with my muffler, so what I have is temporary until I get some time.

look for my Frankenmuffler or Ugly Betty thread. I modified mine and most who have heard it, like it. Either that, or I have a lot of nice friends who do not want to hurt my feelings. Anyway, I shortened mine and gutted it. It weighs between 11-15lbs (can't remember honestly) - stock it was closer to 30 lbs. While it sounds pretty good, I still like Ben's better and would recommend that over mine if you have the $$. His also looks a LOT better - hence the name of mine - Ugly Betty... If I get time later I will try to post a link, but you should pull it right up with Ugly Betty and my user name in the search.

My solution to the problem....a simple 1 in 2 out from M&K....no valance modification is needed....well except for removing it......I do have a fiberglass replacement waiting for me when I get home from my business trip to modify.

M&K sells muffler where the tail pipes are not welded on. they provide clamps so you can orient the pipes to your liking. I just put a 2in 2out on mine on Friday and it sound awesome.

Trust me, if I had the funds right now, I would be giving Ben a call. But for now, I am going the less expensive route. I stopped by a muffler shop today and we crawled around underneath as I described what I was looking to do. He did not seem to think it would be a problem, he just asked if I had a picture he could hand to his guy and say "do this" - so I am going to try to find a pic of what I am looking for.

I followed Shanes advise and searched Ugly Betty and saw some ineteresting stuff. Shane - I am digging the sound clip you provided - too sweet! Are you still running Ugly Betty? I think I read a post somehwere that you removed it.

If I am just looking for a little more growl and noise, do I need to dig out the wadding material that is in there and drill some holes in bulkheads, or will I get a noticable change in noise just by adding a second tip on the right side? Also, it sounds like a 1.5 inch should be about right, agree?

There is no fiberglass insulation on the stock muffler. Only baffles. The right side outlet bypasses the baffles and will make the muffle considerably louder.
