My new car is home.

Well this afternoon, I picked up my 1980 911SC. This is the car that has been sitting for the most part parked in a garage for the past 4 years.
I put fresh gas in and some fuel injector cleaner, and a quart of oil. Brakes were firm and I have a new AAA membership so I took off on the 75 mile drive home with my son on my tail.

She ran a bit rough at first. But smoothed out as she warmed up.

It's been awhile since I drove an older Porsche. Took me a bit of time to get used to the clutch and limited foot space for my size 12 Wide feet. But I got it.

Engine ran pretty good considering that half the gas tank was full of 4 year old gas. Ran strong and pulled hard.

Saturday I will change the oil, adjust the valves, and hopefully flush and replace the brake fluid. If I have time I will drain and fill the Transmission (what is the best fluid to use in the trans).

I am starting my list of repairs.
#1. Track down the short in the window switches. Probably just a fuse but I got the impression that it has blown before so the hunt begins.

Any suggestions/tips would be greatly appreciated.

I'll get pictures on Saturday and post them.

Welcome to the Porsche world, welcome to the Pelican community, and welcome to the Plot! Check my sig and register your SC over there too. You bought the right vintage friend.

On a personal note, back when I was in school, I worked for a company there in Orem called STS. They were the contractor for the Utah Blue Stakes service. I must have spray painted every road in Provo-Orem. Is the Texas Steakhouse place still in business down by the Y? I cannot remember the name, but it was there by Sierra West Jewelers and they had a hamburger that was 3 or 5 lbs and you got it for free if you could eat the whole thing.

Hey Rob,

Congrats on your new toy! You have to post some pictures of her.
I would recommend Swepco for the tranny.

Swepco 201 is the best lubricant for your car. Order it now, as you probably won't find it locally.

My car is a White Targa.
I will post pictures tomorrow. My camera battery is charging as we speak.

When you do an oil change do you guys use anything besides the gasket on the sump?

Forgot to order gasket but I think there is a local supplier that will have them tomorrow morning.

Thanks,

One more question.
When I drove home 75 miles last night I kept a close eye on the oil pressure and the temp gauges. Everything was good but when I got home everything smelled like hot oil. Is that normal on an older car?

I get the same smell when I drive my 1960 Sunbeam Alpine.

If by the "gasket on the sump" you mean the crush ring for the drain bolt, you'll also need a crush ring for the drain bolt on the oil tank. You don't really need to remove and replace the sump. In fact, it can be reinstalled in the wrong orientation and damage the oil pump pickup pipe.

A little smell is normal for these cars but if you have a strong smell of buring oil, you probably have some leaks. Any oil that drips down onto the heat exchangers gets burned off and can smell. Leaks are not uncommon, although most are simple to fix.

Being that your car has been sitting up, you might have a bit of oil to burn off, also you might want to think about replacing the fuel filter as well. Welcome fellow noob.

Regarding your window switches, it seems they are replaced often because they don't last.
So if it's not a fuse it may be a switch problem

If you smell like oil after driving, then you got leak blowing in through heat exchangers. Also an obvious dripping of oil if it's a good amount can be the engine oil cooler. You don't want that to be one of the first issues as it can be quite costly 1500$ plus.
