81 SC cylinder/head re-machining questions

Hello,

My 81 sc suffered from two broken exhaust side head studs on cylinder 1, and the leakage roughed up the mating surfaces between the cylinder and head. My plan is to machine a total of .25mm from the head and the cylinder to get fresh surfaces. (Not .25mm from each for a total of .5mm) Then I am going to add a .25mm cylinder base gasket on top of the 1mm base gasket already there to keep cylinder 1 at the same height. The cylinder bores are in great shape.

I would like to know:

1) How come there was not a 'ce-seal ring' in between my cylinders and heads as shown in the diagram from pelican below? (part # 6) I have seen heads with grooves in them to accept sealing rings or O-rings. My cylinders are Mahle 952N1 W15. I guess aluminum on aluminum makes a good enough seal?

2) Any tips and/or advice on mounting and machining the heads and cylinders would be appreciated. I'll be on a Haas vf6 or vf2.

Thanks,

- Andrew
