SSI Authentication

I just bought a pair of used heat exchangers. I took them to my mechanic to verify they were if fact SSIs and correct for my 3.2. There isn't any brand or part #s on the exchangers. He put a magnet on the the pipes itself and it didn't stick. It did around the heater boxes, but not the pipes. Seems as though these are copies. I'm just looking for conformation as to what other think.

If they're thick flange and stainless, they're SSIs.
A photo could easily determine this also.

I'll post some pics tomorrow. The magnet test indicates only the heater boxes are stainless. The pipes appear to be be steel.

Stainless steels are a general group of steel alloys with 10.5% (or more) chromium.

The chromium gives the steel its passivated 'stainless' property --some are magnetic. (more carbon => magnetic)

Thanks for that info The stainless I've tried with a magnet has no attraction,... Once in a while I find a piece with a very slight attraction. I thought it was all the same re: magnets

So would the SS used in SSI's have magnetic attraction ? I can't afford them but I'm curious.

OK... i just went out and tested my new SSIs. My magnet was very slightly attracted to the pipes, but not noticeably attracted to the heater boxes.

In your initial post ,you stated
"He put a magnet on the the pipes itself and it didn't stick. It did around the heater boxes, but not the pipes.'
These two statements are completely opposite each other.

Did I miss something?

My SSI are all Stainless/non magnetic.

The statements are not opposite. The exhaust pipes are not magnetic, but the heat exchanger box parts are. In other words, it's almost as the manufacture used stainless on the boxes, but skimped on the rest.

I'll post pics tomorrow. I'd like to get some comments on the pics. Everything I've read about SSIs regarded them as quality product. These exchangers are not impressive quality wise.

Hello,
I went out and checked mine, non-magnetic, everywhere. Mine have a SSI part number on the bottom SSI480350 on one and SSIXXXXXX on the other one.

No SSI stamped number?

SSI has numbers on every heat exchange they make. They spot weld every 1/2" or a little closer.

Dansk does not have part numbers stamped into them and the welds are 3/4" to 1" apart.

If you are looking for power and reliability stick with SSI ($$$).

For a good serviceable long lasting stainless heat exchange Dansk makes a good product.

SSIs can come in thin or thick flange, with or without o2 bung.

If you're worried about performance differences or something, the Dansk, SSI, and the stock HEs all offer the same design, but the build quality of SSIs is what everyone likes. Performance will be the same between SSIs and Dansk and old stock HEs.

I wish I'd known about the part numbers. It would have saved me some hassle. The spot welds look to be about an inch apart. The quality is not very good.

Here they are:

Unless someone sold them to you as "SSIs", you're worrying about nothing, IMO..

The functional design of all the "backdate-style" HEs is the same. Put them on your car and go drive it around.

Oh, and search "3.2 SSI". You'll find lots of varying opinions.

Agreed. They're not SSI. If they're rusting on the pipes and flanges, and there's no part numbers on them, they're another brand. My old SSI's looked great even after several years on the car.

Just took a set off a car this week. Those are not real SSI's. I hate seeing these types of transactions. Hopefully you can get a refund.
