Tire wear Toyo R888
Hi,
I installed my track wheels today for next week's track day. On the rear, the wear on the outside shoulders is much more (rounder) than on the inside. Tire size is 225/50 x 16 Toyo R888 Hot tire pressure = 2.4 bar Toe = 0°18' Camber -2°02' TB 26mm anti-roll bar standard SC (now replaced by carrera bar) Bilstein sport BBS wheels 8x16 Is this wear pattern normal? Please help me to understand this . Thanks, André |

The wear pattern indicates that the your tire pressures may be too low.
Reading around, it seems that the R888's like high pressures. I use my R888 for Autocross and I have found that my hot pressures are 42 psi Front/46 psi Rear psi (2.9 bar Front/3.2 bar Rear) appear to work the best (good grip, even temps with my pyrometer)..

My experience with tire pressures on R888 is the opposite. I found them to be much better at around 32psi hot.
I think you will find that you will continue to wear the outside edges faster, unless you stiffen up the suspension further, as well as increase negative camber. |

Yes, I read all about that when I first started using them. Tried the high pressures but found that I had very little grip - the tires felt 'greasy'. Dropped them to 32psi and had immediate improvement, and noticeably faster lap times.
This was in my '76 911, stock 2.7 motor, weighing under 1000kg. That's my experience anyway. |

Your suspension is pretty soft with 26mm torsions and a standard sway bar so you will roll to the outside of the tires.
What is your ride height? What setup are you running up front? Do you have even wear in the front? That would be unusual because the front suspension is softer still and it's hard to get much negative camber there.

Hi,
Last year I also had standard 19mm TB's in the front with standard sway's, but monoballs in front with 1.5° camber. Wear pattern front is much more even. Ride height was a bit lower than euro This year I installed 21mm TB's front I (the car) lost some weight : around 1060kg now Ride height rear around 25, front a bit lower than 25.5 I have also experienced that with higher temps, pressure go's up and the tires feels more greasy... Geronimo, Yes we do have track days in our mayonnaise country....from my place 30min to Zolder, 1hour to Spa Francorchamps, 1h30 to the ring, and don't underestimate Mettet a brand new track close to the French border, I can not complain... This Wednesday I go to Zolder, the 26the to Francorchamps André |

Belgian beer and world class tracks! What could be better?
You might want to post some pictures. I'm trying to imagine how far over the tire is wearing on the outside. From my experience 26mm torsions are too small. 28 29 or 30mm rear torsions will help a lot. You may want to go to harder bushings as well.

I've been running 888s for two or three years now. For track use, they like a lower pressure. I run 32f/34r psi hot. Going over 38psi hot will kill the tires in one day.
