911R Article in Excellence

Just seen the latest (December) issue of Excellence which has some fabulous photos of the exterior/interior of a superbly restored 911R.

Can't remember who the restorers were but in the article it says that they grafted on a set of original 911R rear wings to replace the heavily modified ones the car had when it was found - how many people have an original set of 911R rear wings/flares laying around ?!!

Great photos - recommended for anyone modifying their early car to a 911R look-alike.

Have you seen the article Bob (Tilton) ?

hey andy. thanks for the talbot.

yeah, that car is beauuuutiiifuuul!!! had to go out and buy an additional issue aside from my subscription issue.

have some questions on it. i noticed it does not have the thru the hood gas tank filler. this would be the only R i've seen without one. and, the rear view mirror has the break away style that appeared on the '68s. i guess some '67 cars did have following year features. was this because they were made later in the year? i've only seen one other '67 have a '68 style mirror which was an ST style cris drove to an R meeting. cris?

while we're on the subject, does anyone else know what issues the R has made an appearance (other than the gold R in the mid '90s)? i'd like to expand my R "literature".

Bob,

Did you make it to the Car Show at Moscone Center?

There was a red 911R there.. Apparently the owner lives in Corte Madera and races it at CSRG events.

A red R? Why would anyone repaint an R anything other than white unless it is a copy?

On the subject of R's, I saw a real R last weekend that was the only non white car to leave the factory. The recent owner is having a bare metal restoration done at Scalli Motorsports. The shocker is that the only non white car (gold to match original owner's wife's Caddy) is to be repainted WHITE. I guess if you have the money....

Andy

Where did you get Excellence in the UK? - I haven't seen it anywhere except at swap meets.

Roy,
I know this is not exactly local to you, but Karmann Konnection in Southend always seem to get hold a few copies of Excellence.

Other than that, I would guess that any other 911 part shop may get copies, or maybe even Porsche Club GB may have the magazine.

I have never seen it in a newsagents - maybe Andy can correct me.

Thanks - I may have a ring around and see if anyone has them.

I'm in PCGB but haven't seen it in there. I may also try a 'better' WH Smith and see if they can order it - the Carlisle one couldn't stop chewing their straw long enough to make an effort!

Excellence isn't carried by any of the magazine distributors in the UK, so no use looking in WH Smith or whatever. Why not take out a subscrition direct? Cheaper - and you get the mags each month.

I have a number of older issues as doubles, if you are interested.

Roy, there's a new branch of the American booksellers 'Borders' that has opened in Kingston - they stock it there. I know they have a branch in Charing Cross Road so maybe elsewhere too.
Keith (Seume) is right though - it would be cheaper to take out a subscription if you want it regularly. There are quite often special offers advertised in Porsche Post where you can get 3 free issues to see if you like it before taking out the subscription - they must be keen to get a foothold in the UK !

I too thought it odd about no hole for the fuel filler cap. They specifically mentioned the 'fast fill' feature of the tank and show a pic of the tank with the filler right below the missing hole!

fuel filler

I think the article says that this was a prototype and did not have the fuel filler in the hood like the rest of them did.

Hello!

In fact one of the 4 protypes, chassinumber #306681 was "Feuerrot" original.

The R you say is gold is number 15, is he really repainting it in white????

Kindly regards

Thomas Skogli
