Roof rack on -67 911L

I'm thinking on putting a roof rack on my relativly original 911L, and don't know if I'll go for a new system like Thule. I'm afraid it won't fit the style of the car.
Should I try to get my hands on a old VW beetel rack - or is there maybe other marks that fits better.
Any comments?

Both Thule and Yakama mfr racks to go onto the rain gutters of some cars. I have seen this system carrying slicks on some 911s that are driven to the track. The concern is that they racks may bend/scratch the rain gutters of a 911.

If you want to carry track tires, look into a small race trailer that can be pulled by your 911. I have seen custom hitches made thath you can not see unless you are pulling.

This is what you need:

Vintage Roof Rack

There's a 60's VW around town with one of these and it looks great! -- Curt

That would be cool, if it fit. I have seen original Porsche ski roof-racks for relatively cheap. You just have to look around a bit. I almost bought an original, still in the wrapper, but then realized, I'd never go skiing with the car, unfortunately.

'67 911L? the L was only available in '68 which was replaced by the E the following years.

what will you be using the rack for? bikes? snowboards/skiis? every once in awhile, ebay has the rack style that holds skiis and mounts on the rear. i've seen a yakima rack on an older 911 at my mechanics. good luck.

I have a Yakima rack that fits on my 911 and holds 2 wheels and tires and a jack, etc. I combined two towers with a Bauer tray - works fine. The 911 rain gutters are very strong and will suppoert 100 lb with no problem. I just placed some gaffer tape between the rubber covered tower clamps and the gutter to protect the paint. There was a Porsche accessory rack available for early 911s from the factory - but these are rare and will not support that much weight.

I recently got a Thule rack. Since I only had a day to get it ready, I slapped a piece of exterior plywood and some steel supports on it, and it holds three wheels/tires without a problem. It's actually rated for the weight of four, but I'm not going to push things.

The way it holds the rain gutter is really well designed. I worried about my paint before mounting it, but don't now.

Go for the Yakima or Thule. Like Jack and Randy. That's what I'm planning to do. I like the idea of the little tow behind trailers, but in California, you can only do 55 mph while towing a trailer, but 70 without, on the freeway.

Thanks guys, I really appreciate your opinions (when I try to ask friends, they don't put to much effort into these type of considerations).
And Bob - at least I think she's a L. I have no history on her, only that first registration year was -67 (and that she's a US import) and that she's got some of the extras that the L had.
Right now I'm thinking about using the rack for ski/snowboard - later maybe for other transportation.
This rear rack, was it original accessories at the time? And did they sell roof rack as well?

Hello

Porsche had a base carrier system since the 911 hit the road in the 60´s. Just look around as all 1965 to 1994 have the same roofline and even 993 will fit.

Eileen fan,

If you are not certain about the year or model of your car, you should post the chassis number (VIN #). Many of us have the Red Book and would be happy to check it out for you.

What does "VIN" stand for?

eileen_fan,

VIN = Vehicle Indentification Number. One of those silly things folks need when they register their car with the Department of Motor Transportation (DMT)

eileen_fan, from the chassis number (VIN) your car is a 1967 built some time after Nov 1966 & came with the 901/06 130bhp engine. The original engine would have a serial number in the range: 911001-911190.

eilleen fan,

andyjboy is correct on the 1967 model year. However, the Red Book shows a different range of engine numbers. The red Book shows that your chassis number is for a 1967 911 coupe and your engine number would have been between 909001 and 912050.

The L model was a 1968 model year car.

The engine no. says 911579.
This means that she's a -67 mod made in late -66, and a clean 911 coupe???
There are ventilated discs on all four weels, Fuchs alloy, leather covered steering wheel and a brushed alloy dash (the one behind the radio). Were these things optional at the time of buying?

The 1967 model was produced through July 1967. The normal production years runs from August to July).

The turned aluminium trim was standard equipment in 1967. The vented disk brakes, fuchs wheels and leather streering wheel were standard on the 911S and optional on the standard 911.

Don't tell me I might have a S?
Or on the other hand -- please do!!!!!

The 4-speed transmision was only offered on the United States models and only on the standard 911. The 911S had a 5-speed transmission.
