Abs non _ op

braking is like putting foot on a brick, i bought my 964 in oct last year being a new owner to porsch i didn't realise i should have abs on a car 20 years old now i realise it has (or should have) i should say, also i don't have power asist steering and think its a possible linked problem. in my history notes there is nothing to indicate a previous problem.

Sounds like the brake booster is not working, the power steering in hydraulic and not related.

And still haven't figured out how to spell it yet, eh?

Just kidding. I agree with James Brown; something wrong with the vacuum booster.

The power steering should be an unrelated problem...

You can pull off the booster vacuum hose with the engine running and feel for vacuum at the hose end. if there is vacuum, then it could be the booser, if not, check that hose to make sure it's hooked up at the engine. Only need a little vacuum to make the booster work. and the engine might die when removing the hose.

The C4 does not use vacuum for the power brake system.I just repaired the same problem in a 1989 C4, Check the brake accumulator it's located under the trunk carpeting it looks like a black ball. What year is your C4?? The best advise I can give is to buy the 964 repair manual and get the Durametric's cable if you plan on owning one of these cars. There is a book called "The 964 owners companion" it's about $60 and it worth every penny.

Back to you problem, The 964 uses a high pressure system to controll the power brakes, the drive lock system (PDAS) and the the clutch. If the accumulator fails the brakes will not have power assist, and you may see a warning light on the dash, or here a alarm beep?I could be a failed pump, a high presure switch, or the accumulator.

Let me know what you find, I will try and help you all that I can, remember one thing, This problem can be repaired so don't give up!!!

hi tab tanner, latest :- bled at the pressure resevoir, as per book, but no difference then switch ignition on, pump operated for approx 25-30secs operated brake twice and pump started again, next test was to let pump run again till it stopped then turned off the ignition and turned on again every 10 mins to find out when pump would start again, it took 35 mins then the pump repressurised, does this give you any more ideas?.thanks in advance.

The accumulator is going bad, you should be able to pump the brake pedal 20-30 times befor the pump will come back on (you said it took twice) Replace the accumulator and bleed the brake system a second time and you should be fixed
