Guys-
On a related note - what would be a good source for FG bumpers? In my case, interested in cleaning up the appearance of an '85. No flares or other body modifications in this case.

Thanks.

Yeah I sold my crush tubes and tossed the shocks. The rear is held on by the 4 stanchions from the stock bumper and 6 body screws. Solid as a rock, but it will crack at the lightest hit. Have not mounted the front yet, but will probably have some kind of flange mount.

Getty, MA Shaw, or TRE.. but why not just remove the big rubber bumpers, plug the holes, then repaint? Lots of examples done here and it looks very good and is practically free. FG bumper is about $500 + paint and mounting.. If you want to shed pounds, the go FG but just to clean up the appearance I wouldn't.

I have empirical evidence of what happens when you get hit from behind using a glass bumper. All I'm going to say is that you have to consider that both the front and rear FG bumpers are not only mounted by two brackets of any number of designs, but also attached along the top to the quarter panel in back and the front fender in case of the fronts.

Any impact will deliver force all along these areas. I know. Or maybe I built some strong bumpers.

I left the rear shockers in place and bolted/welded a bar between the two, goes someway to protecting the engine with a rear bump..

Thumbs up Toss Them

I remove mine when I update/graded to Fiberglass bumpers. You save weight and if you have any type of front end accident you will need to replace the bumper completely in most cases. And a front cooler upgrade helps most Porsche run better, so do it at the same time.

Fiberglass Bumpers/Valence

I just put a GT-Racing rear RSR style rear bumper on my SC. Right now I have it mounted only to the body, but intend to make some lightweight crush tubes out of thick wall PVC tubing and a piece of aluminum. On the front, I left the stock front bumper and replaced the lower valence with a "Euro" style valence. In the front, the bumper shocks are in place behind the aluminum front bumper. I decided to opt for more front protection at the cost of some weight.

front valence without fog lights (yet)

rear bumper mounting in progress.
