Scott,
Are ya teasing us ? Please tell. I also have a 69 912 Targa and immediately broke the fixed visor bracket. That was a real pain finding a replacement part !! Please pass on the info. Mike |

Targa Visor "Upgrade"
Ok...first a disclaimer. You may not want to do this modification as it will require drilling a hole in the upper window frame!
The modification combines the pivots and fixed plastic mounts used for a coupe's visors with those from the Targa. As you may be aware new coupe visor pivots are $$$! My solution to this problem was to watch the Pelican classified section for someone selling a set of coupe visors...condition of the visors isn't important, as what you want are the pivots which can be cleaned up and made functional. The plastic inner mounts are relatively inexpensive parts that I purchased "over the counter" at a local independent shop. > Remove the Targa visors and mounting hardware from the window frames > The inner plastic coupe mounts are attached to the inner window frame using one of the existing inner Targa visor mount points. These plastic mounts are "angled" to be compatible with the geometry of the window frame. The inner mounts will need to be modified to accept the larger diameter of the inner mount point of the Targa visor. This is easily accomplished by placing the mount in a vice and enlarging the existing mounting groove with a hand drill equipped with a bit of the same diameter. I started smaller and worked up to the point where I had the proper fit. (Note: I would also recommend using a small washer under the head of the mounting screw as I found that after repeated use, disconnecting the the visor would force the plastic past the screw head.) > The outer pivots require drilling a hole in the inner window frame large enough to allow the pivot to be mounted flush with the frame and another small hole for the mounting screw. You can determine the mounting point by attaching the coupe pivot to the Targa visor while it is attached to the modified inner mount and line up and mark where your mounting point will be. > The coupe pivot will need to be slightly bent to conform to the geometry of where it is located on the inner window frame (different than on a coupe). I did this by mounting the pivot, attaching the visor and noting how much it would need to be bent. I secured the pivot in a vice and used a long handled box end wrench as a lever to bend the pivot arm to the desired angle (You'll likely have to play with this a little at a time until you get it right). > Attach and adjust the tension of the visor pivot and you are good to go!! Note: this will leave a small hole and "impression" in the vinyl on the inner window frame where the outer targa mount was located. I will post better (close up) pics soon... |
