Kevin,

Manually-operated Cabrio tops used latches that are compatible with earlier Targa receptacles. When the Cab. went electric, the latches were reversed in their direction to 'grab' the receptacle, and the Targa latches were changed at the same time in production -- '86 models and later, I believe!

Yes, Warren's correct. The top you want is the '83-'85 manual Cabriolet top. The '86 and later tops have roller latches and are incompatible with the '85 and earlier Cab and Targa windshield header frames.

Folks, Tyson has a pretty good story about how he knows about the dates about latch type change over. I know if I had the same batch of parts that Tyson had purchased for the cab conversion, I would have given up and the parts would sitting in my garage. Really an inspiring piece of work - looks like it came from the factory that way.

I did a search on this topic, since I've spotted a manual top for sale in Germany and it shed some light into my questions, but didn't make me confident enough to place a bid.

The seller told me that what I'm looking at is a manual top -so far so good, since it's supposed to go on a 72 Targa - but states that the year of the top is 1981.
Now, we all know that at that time, there were no 911 Cab in production, so that piece of info is useless to me.

My Q is - can I rely on the fact that it is a manual top alone to be sure that it WILL fit my 72?
I'd hate to spend a serious amount of €€€ just to find out it won't fit my car...

Can you get him to send you pix of the latching mechs?

IIRC, the pre-86 targa tops are pretty much the same, except at some point the introduced the extra pin in the targa bar, which is irrelevant for a cab.

Also, don't rule out that maybe he just doesn't really *know* what year the top came from. I bought some VW parts from a guy once. In the batch were some NOS 100mm gas caps, which he swore were for 60's bugs. I let him bask in his delusions
