Another detail. If I am correct the 72- 75.5 is still 4 bolt, same as the 69 to 71.

Gordon is correct. The 1972-75.5 is a 4 bolt CV.

I updated the chart once again.

Chart issue

Guys

I have a 1968 911 with 76 banana arms and wheel hubs (car still has a 2.0L & 901 trans.)

I recently blew up the CV joint at the trans. end of the shaft. I'm trying to replace it and find my newer axles (1976) are 25 spline 27mm OD as your chart suggests. I purchased a new GKN/Lobro axle assy for a 1968 from Pelican figuring I would just rob the CV off it and add it to my axle, only to find out that it's a 28 spline 27mm OD and doesn't fit.

Your chart started out as 65-69's were 28 spline then late in the thread, changed to 25 spline based on someone inspecting an assy. and the chart was changed to show 25.

I'm stumped. The CV joint that was on the car was 25 spline, yet the new GKN purchased from Pelican came in as 28 spline? Anyone know how/where to get a CV joint or assy (for a 1968) with a 25 spline CV joint on it for my 901 trans?

Doug

I have the early SWB CV's rebuilt with or without axles.

PM me for more details.

This is sort of related...
Getting geared up to change the boots and grease in my CV joints (77 targa with 915). Did Porsche ever use the circular lock plates on 911's? Also, my car does not have any pinch clamps on the inner boots and I can move the boots back and forth on the axles. To me that isn't right. There is gear oil oozing out from the output shafts - is there a seal that can be easily replaced?

Do new boots come with clamps? I have access to the special pinch clamp tool.

Thread revival!

Is there a chart somewhere out there that documents the various lengths of the axles in the 996 and 997 Porsches?

I just took apart axles from a 68L. The axle length for the 65-68 should be 411mm. 415mm is VW Type 1.

Timely renewal of a thread. I'm going to be in the market for some Axle/CV assemblies for my 915/68. I've been looking at different setups and notice some have a cap on the end rather than being open. Is this something that can be added to a CV joint or is it year/model specific?

Only certain flanges can use a cap like the 85.5 and newer. The flanges need to be designed to use a cap. The early 911s have the CV joint flat against the flange with a gasket to seal them.

I have the full range of CV/Axle assemblies from my chart rebuilt and available for purchase. PM me if you are interested.

Fun thread...

I purchased new GKN axles for my 1979 911.

Length appears the same but the axles are larger in diameter.

Boots are a little different. The original axles did not have moon plates or washers. I'm hoping these don't need them either.

Great information. Thanks for posting it. I’m in search of one right now to go from a 915 tranny in a 914 car I’ve got 911 hubs on the outside and 915 flanges on the tranny trying to sort out the correct axle length they have 10 mm bolts on both sides, four bolts, two pins on transmission side anybody have a correct axle length or axle to buy .the one I have is 108 mm outside not 79 mm inside with a gasket sets. Any info is greatly appreciated out. Slamming out

Hope Tom is still watching this thread. I have a 1973.5 T with the OE 108mm CV joints. I would like to put caps on the CV joint for the many times I disconnect the CV joint from the tranny, to make it less messy to do so, and to keep dirt out of the joint when it's just hanging on the end of the axle.

Can an 85.5-later cap be easily adapted to work? Any other solutions?

TIA.

You should think about custom axles. Both Empi and Sway-Away make a custom axle. It is a free-floating axle for the 914 to 911 915 type conversion. It has the same number of splines ans the 911 CV and it’s free floating for slight length adjustments. With these you can use different CV”s on either end to match your outer hubs, and the differential flanges. PM me for more details.

I usually just use a Ziploc bag and wrap it around the outer CV secure it with a zip tie or just zip it up. I’ve also seen circular plastic discs with holes drilled in that can slip over the end of the CV and body bolted in place.

Tom, thanks for the reply. Sometimes I wrap a plastic bag around the joint when it's disassembled, but I frequently get lazy. It appears there isn't an easy solution.
