Noise from engine compartment
I have a 85 3.2 Carrera. A few weeks back I encountered a rattling noise coming from the right side of the engine compartment. The noise appeared after about 15 minutes of driving. I could only hear the noise from inside the car. Even revving the car and listening with my head inside the engine compartment, I was not able to hear the noise. I parked the car and decided to check it out the following day. The noise was not audible the next day.
Today the noise was back. Again only when inside the car. It started after 10 minutes of driving. I made a recording with my cell. I'd appreciate if anyone would have a listen and give me an opinion. In the clip you'll hear the pitch and frequency of the rattle change with the rpms. Milage is 120.000 miles. YouTube - Enginerattle.wmv

I am by no means an expert. But I think I've read here that a broken head stud can sound like a playing card in the spokes of a bike, and that is kind of what your sound clip sounds like. It could be something innocuous like a loose bracket or something too.

I would think that the symptom of a broken head stud would be permanent, not intermittent, or?

PCV type valve up behind the oil filler neck. pull off the small vacuum hose and plug the hose.

John, I'll give that a try. Hope you are right. So this valve is not needed? Should I replace it if it's the culprit?
