Aftermarket Seat Recommendations?
Im looking for some aftermarket front seats for my 83SC and wondered if anyone has a recommendation. Im a tall person and would like a good lumbar support. I also don't want to spend a fortune. Ebay advertises some pretty cheap seats, but not sure what I would be getting.
Thanks!

If you have a bad back like me, a cheap seat isn't what you want. Look for a pair of Recaro SRD or Speed Seats, not cheap, but not going to break the bank either. My back is pretty screwed up, and have found the SRDs (now called Speed Seats) gives me most comfort. I have SRDs in my 78SC, 83 Cab, 87 924S and even had a set in my old Isuzu Trooper. Another option is a SACRO-EASE Posture Correction Seat Insert; Safety equipment, safety supplies, ergonomic seating, orthopedic support
I use one in my Suburban ((haven't been able to find a base for a SRD) and it really does help and I take it from car to car. You can order them from here, a PCA member owned business, The Best Back & Sleep Store - Local Business - Naples, Florida | Facebook Hope this helps and just beause a seat looks like a Recaro doesn't mean that it will feel like a Recaro..

I just bought the Recaro Expert M. The seat bottom is the flatest they make. The bolsters on the seat bottom of other models can be restrictive and anoying after a bit. If you go for the speed model the S option has smaller lower bolsters but I haven't seen them.

With regard to eBay seats, you get what you pay for.
I got a set of Cobra RS seats for my 83SC and I love them. That said I don't have any back issues to speak of. You might want to keep your eyes open for a pair of sport seats right here the pelican classifieds. If money is an issue you'll likely have to be patient for a good used pair at a good price. You will also have to consider mounting brackets for anything not stock. You can usually buy them or if you're handy, make them.

Here is a few pictures of the Recaro Trend seats, these are not made anymore but have the same seat bottom as the Style & Sport. I liked these when I bought them but over time the lower has become to restrictive, it sarts to bug me after about a 1/2 hour.
![]() ![]() Note both seats are black the flash makes them look grey. Be advised not to but Recaros with the Avus cloth, get the Nardo. |

Thanks for all of the suggestions guys. After looking at prices they are definitely not a cheap investment. Still good advice.

Andster-
Don't give up so easily. I scored really nice Recaro SEs for $350 on craigslist. Try craigslist and VW Vortex classifieds. Note: the Recaro-made seats that came stock in certain VWs are generally not a bolt in proposition -and neither are E30 BMW ones- but there are tons of aftermarket ones floating around out there relatively inexpensively. Consider Corbeau and or Konig seats as well, but stay away from the no name ebay cheap-o ones as they are notorious for falling apart. YMMV.

If I can say one thing... Keep it simple.
The classic 911 seats in the air cooled (impact bumper) cars are great and very hard to beat IMO.

I thought about recovering and re-padding my old seats and its still an option. They do get pretty worn after 28 years. The leather kits are pretty expensive though. I havn't looked into getting the foam or if its even available. Thanks again for the reply.

Seats with the expert bottom can use the factory manual sliders. Seat with trend - sport - style bottom should use the recaro sliders. The recaro sliders will bolt to your cars mounts but the back bolts will be hard to install.

abides.

If you're tall and want something that reclines, I'd get some '85 and up factory sport seats. They're a lot more comfortable than the SC seats, and don't sit as high as most aftermarket seats I've seen.
