Hey Roar,
What did they make the last pair of hinges from? Any chance you could weigh them and also weigh the original pair, the ones that looked like they were made from aluminum? Thanks, Jeff Last edited by javadog; 02-02-2014 at 07:30 AM.. |

Hi.
There is no weight difference on the two pair of hinges you see. They are made based on some very detailed drawings from the original unbent ones and my old ones. The reason we made new ones was that the body shop just got feed up with my initial repair of the damaged ones which was done based on pictures(which was off course off) Now they are better looking than the original ones which was off course made 20 yrs ago with the alu welding tools they had back then. So, they are both made from aluminum? The reason I ask is that I have a hot rod 911 project and I've been thinking of making some hinges. The stock ones weigh about 265 grams and I figure I could get them down to about 200 grams with a little drilling and machining work. Naturally, I also thought of forming a pair from aluminum sheet metal, or possibly making some from bent tubing, like the 959 ones. If you ever find yourself holding one of your hinges and standing next to a scale...

WOW, what a neat undertaking. The 959 is indeed a one of kind, and a technological trend setter for latter Porsches when it was introduced in the 80's. You may be interested in an article titled "Time capsule" in EXCELLENCE magazine Feb-2014 issue, about a 959 that was restored. Good luck, and hope to see you drive the car (pictures of course).

Rebuilding the 959
Hi guys.
I have some problems that I hope some of you followers might know a solution to. On these pieces of heat protection which is inside tho decklid inside the whole rear bumper there is thin alu foil. This alu foil is about 15 times thicker than regular food alu foil. Any ideas? Here is some pics: ![]() Inside the deck lid ![]() ![]() Regards, Roar |

Probably same material as used on the 964 rear bumper heat shield. Maybe buy one of those and rework it?

I only need the foil. The pieces are repairable. And yes it has to be exact. They are NLA from Porsche

I search with the part number 959 556 473 01 on pelican just for the heck of it and it shows it costs $223.25. But I see you mentioned that its NLA which is too bad.

It looks like the same material used for the heat protection used above the engine on the Boxster.

I would contact Sonnen Porsche. They have been able to get NLA items for my 930 from Porsche still. - It took about 6 weeks to get some of the interior trim pieces I wanted, but they did get them for me.
Chris.
