Get the factory short shift "kit" unless you go with an aftermarket setup like a WEVO.
Lots has been written on the subject but I'll just add that our gearboxes DO NOT like to be speed shifted. You must learn to pause between 1-2 shift. If you try to beat the synchros you WILL be replacing them. I speak from experience, my friend.

I'd stay away from short shift kits, and focus on making sure you've got fresh bushings in there and the coupler is adjusted. Seriously, there are better things to spend your money on. If your trans has any weaknesses, they'll be accelerated with the added force needed to shift the short.

Thanks for the input ...im going from shifting a mazdaspeed3 turbo to a 1977 Porsche .....maybe i need to learn how to drive it properly.....it just seems like a really long stroke and a little sloppy.

It will be a longer stroke, but it doesn't have to be sloppy. Note what I said about bushings.

+1 to what Mr. Hughes posted.
My DD is Mazda Protege5 so I understand completely the difference you feel. I have also customized my 911 shifter/guts to what feels best to me. Others probably wouldn't like it.

My intention is not to speed shift or abuse the car...just tighten up things a bit...it was my understanding that it was later offered as an option because it was a desired feature.
anyway thanks shumicat for identifying my transmission. Jon |

Porsche loves to add up the options on new cars. That doesn't mean a short shift is good for a 35 year old trans with however many miles you have now.
