3.0 SC alternator fan removal?

Is it possible to remove the alternator fan without removing the complete shroud assembly on a 911 3.0 SC?

I have seen articles on removing the complete alternator assembly but not one on removing just the fan.

The fan, fan housing, and alternator all can be removed on a 3.0 SC while leaving the entire shroud in place. By shroud, I assume you are talking about he big plastic piece that goes over the top and then under every single piece of the intake - right? If yes - then you can remove as I described.

Yes you can just remove the fan and leave the supporting ring/housing in place. Remove the pulley and belt as you normally would. What you're left with is the fan on the shaft. The fan is keyed in place with a woodruff key (looks like a small metal pellet or tic tac) so you have to firmly grab the fan and patiently wiggle it off the shaft. It takes a while to wiggle free because the fan hub and shaft fit is a precise, tight slip-fit.

If you just want to pop the fan off it can be done but it likes to stick on there because of the keyway in the shaft. Tap on the fan gently (lead or brass) while pulling on the blades with your fingers.

Edit - Go with KTL's advice first.

Place a couple of rags under the fan - in the space below - to catch the woodruff key > cause it WILL fall in the most inaccessible place - or have a magnetic pick up tool

To remove my stubborn fan I tapped out 2 holes 180 deg opposite of each other in the fan with a 6mm tap then used a couple of 6mm bolts turned in evenly to work the fan free..

I suspect you might find it easier to just remove the whole fan/alternator/fan housing assembly. Especially if that fan had been on there a while....

Ancient thread, but todays problem for me. Fan stuck on tight on my '85 930!

I did get if off as follows:

0. Microfiber towels packed below the assembly to catch the key if it drops
1. PB Blaster
2. Tapping gently on shaft and inner fan with a small brass hammer (put the nut on the shaft first)
3. Simultaneously pulling while tapping.
4. Rotate the fan so the key is UP when it starts to loosen and come off to try and stop the key from falling. This and the PB blaster and my key just stuck right to the top, grabbed it with a magnet.

New problem:
I guess the 930 engine sits back in the engine compartment a bit more, so while the fan is now completely undone, there is not enough clearance to actually remove it from the shaft/engine bay.

Any ideas, other than dropping the motor or removing bodywork??

That's the shizzle. Never pull/pry on the blades.

^^^^ heat the fan hub area. Tap it gently off the alternator.... Lost count of how many we have done this way... Quick and easy.

heating/tapping worked great for getting the fan off the shaft...

My problem is that although off the shaft, the fan won't clear to remove it. Yes, i could remove the entire housing/alternator/fan, but honestly was just looking to quickly swap the fan itself for a non painted one.

It's tantalizingly close, but will not clear.

Well, if you're hell bent on NOT removing the housing from the shroud, I suppose you can try loosening the engine mount bolts and lowering the engine so the crossmember is no longer in the way ... or you can simply reinsert the fan and remove the unit as a whole.

Your choice

I recommend the latter.

Loosen the band strap and remove the fasteners to the fiberglass engine shroud. Then push the top of the fan nacel back towards the front of the car and remove the fan.
