Knowing that it took a few days of driving to master shifting my 915 transmission on my 74 911, I am very nervous about letting friends and family drive my car. I allowed my brother to drive it for the first time last week, and I was a nervous wreck! As much as I emphasized slowish shifting, he still felt the need to rip through the gears. Luckily he drove like it was a diesel van! 4th gear 1500 rpms. So my question is this...Who do you all let drive your rolling probable cause machines?

Very few people; my mechanic, my tire guy and I actually once let my brother in law drive it and he lit 'em up on take off(never again). A good friend who always lets me borrow his TR6, although the first time he drove it he let the clutch out early( he was used to the throw on his Triumph) and made a horrible nasty grinding noise.

My mechanic (obviously) and NOBODY else. I would let my brother drive it if he asked, and I was with him.

On the way home from picking up my 911 I drove it part way and my wife drove it the rest of the way home. The money did come out of household funds after all. That night we went to play cards at our friends' house and I took my colleague and friend out for a spin and then let him drive it too (he took his wife along) - all on the first day of ownership! So, I guess that if I know and trust someone I'll let them drive it.
Oh yeah, my sister drove it when I took it to Florida in June of this year. ------------------ Rod Walter '88 911 coupe [This message has been edited by Rod Walter (edited 08-03-2001).] |

They are meant to be DRIVEN afterall. Although I find the intimidation fator of the 911 usually keeps new drivers relatively mellow. '81 Platinum Metalic SC COUPE |

I'd let almost anyone drive my SC.
But they couldn't shift it. ------------------ '81 SC Coupe (aka: "Blue Bomber") Canada West Region PCA The Blue Bomber's Website |

That's what I like to hear. Me too--pretty much anyone who asks can drive my modified '83 SC. As a car writer, I have a wide variety of cars in the driveway at all times--Bentley Arnage right now, Audi S8 last week, Ferrari 360 Spider the week before that, etc.--and I let lots of people drive them because I'm interested in their reactions to the cars. Obviously I don't own those cars, but I've never had a bit of trouble letting my wife, 22-year-old daughter, friends, cohorts down at the local volunteer-ambulance squad, etc. drive any of them. Maybe the rest of the world knows a whole lot of far worse drivers than I do.

Adepts only! NO klutzes! 915's must be caressed--not pawed!

My friend who owns a 1990 C4, a friend who owns a worked over WRX, and last night his girlfriend who was wearing a mini skirt - I just had to see what the gear changes might look like from the passenger side! - oh... and she was wearing a g-string which I observed early in the evening!!!!
Sorry.........I'm getting carried away |

My wife has never asked, but I have never offered.
Paradoxically, I let my 18 year old son drive my '88 Carrera. He depends on me to pay his college tution, knows how upset I would be if he broke it, and I can recall how thrilled I would have been to drive a 911 at that age. The closest I ever came to such an experience was at the age of 15 being allowed to sit in the driver's seat of a neighbour's Ferrari 250 GT, with the owner watching me very closely. |

Anyone who asks!
Having said that, only one person (of 15-20) has managed to master the type 915 transmission almost instantly, and he owned a (non Porsche) garage so was used to driving a different shed every week. - roGER |

Since I have owned it, no one else but me!
However, today I had to get the car smogged and the technician "drove it". He stalled it 3 times between the parking spot and the testing rig, about 40 feet! Next time I'm going to do it myself! Mechanics are obviously ok to drive my '87 Carrera. My girlfriend is learning stick on my Bimmer. Since I can't drive in NJ for a few more months (legal woes), we have to switch at the PA/NJ state line. Until now we've actually rented cars for such trips. But I want to get her up to speed on the Bimmer and then take the 911 to NJ to show my parents.
On second thought, maybe I'll just wait until my NJ privileges are restored. |

My brother - less than 16 at the time - once ran out to the carport saying he would move my car (thankfully not a Porsche) our for me. I moved in the direction of the car port but by the time I reached the door, he had started it. Through the door I saw him look up at me proud as can be, his foot slipped off the clutch, the car moved in reverse, I saw his door wasn't shut, it caught on the carport poll, his face went ghost white, and the door slowly bent to the front fender. Lesson learned. Keys are kept close now.
