1968 911 L or 1973 911 E

Looking at two cars right now. Both cars are numbers matching. The '68 had a complete restoration 12 years ago. The '73 has 88,000 miles, has been repainted original color but, needs to be done again. The interior of the '73 needs some help as well. Dash is good but, seats, headliner and misc parts would need to be restored. A great drivers car as it stands. The motor has "S" cams. The '68 is special as it was built on my exact birthdate in 1968 per the COA. What are the odds? Price for the '73 is in the low to mid $40K The '68 would be in the high $40's.

Thoughts?

Unless you need a 911 project to stay mentally healthy, I would avoid a restoration. I'm just about finished with mine and the cost of doing it correctly was unbelievable!

If planning to restore the 73E use the "2x/3x Rule". However much you budget for cost double it, and however long you think it'll take triple it.

449 911L's built in '68 for the US. Of those 449, how many still exist? Better yet, how many exist that were built the same day you were born?! I'm sure Porsche only built a few cars a day back in '68.

There you go! Case closed! It's the 68L hands down IMHO.

I bought a 1967 427 Corvette Roadster that rolled off the assembly line on my birthday. That novelty meant a LOT to me. Buy the 68. You'll love it.

The '68 is having an extensive PPI performed on Monday!

As a former owner of one, I'm a big fan of the '73E; however, I think the pricing makes the '68L a better deal. Restoration costs are going to be significant.

PPI was delayed. Compression test tomorrow, checking head studs, etc. engine has never been rebuilt. A lot depends on the PPI

PPI was a disaster. Car is definitely not as advertised. The '73 E is a solid body car and pretty decent interior. Looking at a complete repaint in the original light yellow. Pulling the tigger this week. This should be fun!
