Cool! A very nice gesture from you Kurt. I'm sure the money will be a nice token, since they are sure to both be early S cars with original paint, sport seats and R wheels
.Regardless, there are lots of parts on these cars that people are looking for, and I'm sure that they can all be sold for a tidy sum. Best of luck financing your 3.6 RS clone,

Perhaps the wealthy lady didn't like her now deceased husband and wants to give away his 'trophy' cars?
Maybe she doesn't want to be so dearly reminded of her beloved husband - it's just too emotional for her? Or, she is eating cat food and is burdened by the storage costs of two rusty junkers? Should we assume that a indigent old lady who needs cash might overlook the value of two "Porsches" in storage? Sheesh, none of us really know! Kurt has already shown a concern for taking these cars for free! I would venture to guess that if Kurt found a couple of concourse Porsches he would not take them away for $1000. Let's not assume too much and not pass judgment on a fellow PelicanHead who has already shown a sense of honor. We await the report! Kurt Last edited by kstar; 06-21-2002 at 09:33 PM.. |

Saffs your friend Tom is a nice guy(mailed me a copy of the first CD he produced). Thanks for sending him. He said a friend from the board told him about it but didnt know your user name. Hows the car doing ? I hope he didnt bang it up. He mentioned that he hasnt had a car in over 5 years and when we drove together it was rather scary when he looked to see how the horn worked and crossed the lane into oncoming traffic. Good thing knowone was coming the other way ! I loved that car it ran so nice. It was pretty quick for a 4 banger too. BTW does he visit the board at all ?

Guys if I planned on doing anything indecent I certainly wouldnt make public notice of it in front of all my pelican peers. You guys are making me feel guilty allready . O.K. I will bring more than $1000.00 just in case. BTW storage in NYC is not cheap ! Most of us would not be able to afford it so she must have some money. I dought she is eating cat food. You guy`s watch to much TV.

Never thought Saffs and I would agree on anything. He is a left wing whacko, and I am a right wing whacko
.Kurt, I'm not trying to but your chops, but "found in a barn" stories almost always bug me. They usually involve someone who really needs the money, selling something that is worth a lot of money for peanuts simply because they don't know any better. Just because they are Porsches doesn't really mean anything. If the widow knows nothing about cars, to her they may just be 3 old cars, an old Pontiac and 2 little foreign things whose only value is the storage fee she won't have to pay any more. It doesn't sound like this is the case here, though. Let us know what you find, Tom |

Come on guys, let the guy take advantage of this opportunity. The old lady made a decision. Look at it this way. She's had the cars in storage for 5 years. Assuming that she has paid $30/month (which is a low estimate), thats $1800 over 5 years. If she was some starving ol' lady that was forced to live off SS, don't you think she'd have gotten rid of them a long time ago? Just the fact that they're 911s should clue you in a little bit. Seems like a few of you are showing a little too much 911 envy....
No offense, but how could anyone twist this around into a moralistic arguement? If you were morally driven at all, instead of spending absurd amounts of cash for the Porsche name, you'd make hefty donations to the United Way and help feed some starving Americans. I'm personally very excited for the man! Oh BTW....no offense anyone.

I dunno, it seems fair to me. I mean, offering any kind of cash for something that's free is descent as long as the money is somewhat proportional (not like two greasy 20s and some pocket lint). Well, other than that I'm gonna wake up sunday morning and see what he finds, who knows what a piece of ***** or treasure it could be.
-On a side note I hope they're both ex-factory racers that were somehow stolen and sold to a columbian drug cartel leader who in turn sold them to Alois Ruf who in turn restored them to 100% factory correctness with matching #s and sold them to this ladies late husband. later, amir

Kurt,
I had much the same thing happen to me three months ago. Sold my old XJ Jag to a close friend in 1980. Sat in his garage for 18 years waiting for him to restore it. He passed away in January and the wife called me for help. Went there and helped her sell all his toys, a 88 911 and lots of spares among the items. As I was leaving she told me "my husband would have wanted you to have the Jag back, and for all you have done, I do not want anything for it." I have it back now (it was my Fathers car) and in the end paid her far more than it would be worth on the market. She was left with no funds after he passed away with no life insurance and a 4 year old daughter to support. Regarding the comments of others about your dealing with the widow... it sounds like she wants the cars to go to a good home. Her husband loved the cars and if you take care of them then you are doing what both of them wanted. Do not let others crass comments get you down. If you want to help financially and she will not accept something to help on the storage fees, then make a donation to her favourite charity after the cars are in your hands and you are sure that they are worth the time and trouble. You may end up with rust buckets or parts cars... or a nice RS! Who knows... Curt... did not know you were a Leica man! I have collected them for years, but mostly the older "M" rangefinder models. Took my first pic with a lllg at age 4 and still have the camera! Also have a 75 year anniversary M-4P that that I picked up while living in Berlin that is new and still in the orginal box... just love the feel and quality of a Leica... kinda like the 911. If you ever find some "extra" ones... pls let me know. If you are looking for something, pls let me know. JoeA

There are truly generous people in the world.
My college roommate shipped his '83 911 SC to my house for Christmas. I had no idea he was going to do that. When one of my mothers friends lost her husband, she asked me to take a look at his sporting equipment to see if anything was of value. I was shocked to find two vintage split bamboo hexagraph fly rods in perfect condition. I told her what she had. She smiled and insisted that I keep them for myself. She is not a wealthy lady, so I sold them for $4,500 and gave her the money. (I did, however, keep some less valuable gear for myself ) This lady was not at all wealthy, she just liked the thought of someone caring for her husbands things. When I told her how thrilled the man was who bought her husbands fly rods, she couldn't have been happier. My guess is that if this lady in Brooklyn loved her husband, she may be happy knowing her husbands toys will bring new smiles to new faces.

Aren't there any other cynics out there who sense an urban legend abuilding among the ravings of somebody who spells "doubt" as "dought"? Okay, okay, I know, illiteracy shouldn't be a negatory these days, in fact he's probably protected under some kind of Americans With Disabilities Act these days. Jeez.

This thread is amusing. I'm betting that they are rusty 924's or 912's that aren't worth their weight in cat food/litter/crap, or maybe not. Even if they are valuable early 911's, and the guy never told his wife, even on deathbed, that they are valuable, who cares? People abandon property, and die with unclaimed property much more valuable than this every day. If she does not want to pay storage or make even a minimal effort to sell these cars, she obviously DOES NOT CARE!!
This makes a great companion thread to the "how much are these old 911's worth?" thread, are they rusty w/ siezed or worn-out early "T" motors? Put it this way, let's say we are having a contest/drawing. 1st Prize: An old Porsche for FREE!! 2nd Prize: TWO old Porsches for FREE!!
