I took mine to a "Car show" and got to park with a rather nice 996.

Not I. That work was done by my shop in Escondido, CA. I'm sure he'd entertain doing more of them if you're interested.

Alternatively, I purchased the Quaife Quick rack & pinion from Patrick Motorsports. I'd imagine they would also do the work / install.

today was a good day to wash and wax the car and finally got around to replacing my taillight gaskets I got months ago.

while I was down there, noticed the lower valve cover gaskets and timing chain cover gaskets seeping a little. oh well, plans for another day.

then after a 35 mile ride, I started getting a surging idle when I returned home. never happened before. decided to try a cheap $35 IAC from amazon and in the mean time, ill take apart the stock one to clean it and see if that helps.

Windshield washer hasn’t been working so I pulled it out last week. The bracket was really rusty and in general it looked rough.

After seeing poor reviews for the $20 URO version not wanting to buy a Porsche version for $120 just yet I figured I would take a shot at it. Gears were jammed up with some kinda grit but the motor ran fine by itself.

Scrubbed the plastic bits with an SOS pad but the washer fluid seemed to have stained somewhat. Polished the brass bits inside. Sandblasted and painted the steel parts and sealed it all back up with a thin layer of RTV along with the original rubber gasket.

I didn’t have the time to pull off the washer fluid bottle but I did flush it out pretty thoroughly until no more bits of gunk came out. To do that I put the tube that would normally connect to the pump in a pan and then shot compressed air into the filler tube under the gas door. That worked really well and I filled it with hot water a few times and blew the water through until it was empty.

Only piece of advice if anyone else tries this is to not tighten the screws too much or it will bind up the pump. The most difficult part by far is getting the little rubber mounting things back in place on the bracket during reinstall today.

End result I now can wash my windshield, the color on the bracket isn’t original but I was glad to be able to reuse the original pump.

650+ miles...

...on Thursday & Friday, including the Overcrest Road to Air|Water Rally, which started by picking a buddy from Denver up at the San Diego airport and finished at the Orange County fairgrounds Pacific Amphitheatre for Will Lee's @PTSRS Colors Of Air|Water display...

Spending time with the vendors on Sat morning at Air|Water was my favorite. I enjoyed catching up with old friends and meeting new people too. I particularly enjoyed talking to folks about what's new and what's on the horizon for our beloved funny lil' German cars. It was good to catch up with Car Bone, Stuttgart Classica, Cary Eisenlohr, James West, Pelican Parts, 1552 Wheels, Bursch, Nitron, etc.

The battery my ‘83 SC came with was working fine but it was a four years old and a traditional style battery that could potentially leak. In perusing various threads here I had seen numerous mentions of the Odyssey PC680 and in on thread a roughly equivalent AGM battery at Oreilly Auto parts the ETX20L.

I like the idea of a lightweight battery and I really like having more room for when I want to disconnect the battery. I stop at Oreilly on the way home this afternoon and they have the ETX20L and they also have a few ETX18L AGM batteries. The 18 is slightly larger than the 20 and has 340CCA but more interestingly they priced 50% off. Apparently it’s an odd size that isn’t selling and they are clearing them out…. Why shouldn’t I give this thing a try for $60?

Biggest hassle was that it doesn’t have post terminals like you would normally have for the battery to clamp on to. Necessity being the mother of invention I use a hacksaw and cut the posts off an extra old battery I have and drill them for the bolts that came with the new battery.

Tomorrow I will get around to making a battery hold down for it but the car fires right up.

Tried to bench test my seemingly failed fuel pump relay. That said, which brand relay is best and which to avoid?

PSA: Open Vent on Oil Drain Pan Prior to Draining Oil Tank!

Hi Pelicans,

Finally got around to my first oil change on the 911s. Read some forum post. Knew about the oil tank being a gusher, and to drain it first. Had my 12 Qt drain/catch pan correctly placed and up on some 4x4s to reduce the amount of splash. Removed the drain plug and was impressed by the flow, until I realized the oil was building up in the top section faster than it was draining into the reservoir. Doh! Shortly thereafter oil overflowed the pan and I rushed to grab the kitty litter before it spread too far. PSA: Don't forget to open the vent on your catch pan prior to pulling the drain plug. Turned what should have been a 30 min. job into a 2 hr. clean up project.

Spend some time wrestling with the CSV. That was fun. /S Been having rough running when the car is cold and smells pretty rich. Pressures have been checked so I suspected the CSV might be over fueling. Man it took a bit to get it out, in fact I was about to abandon the effort after only loosening one of the two bolts that hold the CSV in place because I was concerned I would be able to get it back together.

I was having difficulty getting the one bolt back in but got my second wind.

With it finally removed was able to test it with compressed air and it held 50 psi. so felt better about its condition. Cleaned it up with some brake clean and fired it up with my 12v power supply. Good spray pattern. Went back in the car much easier than the removal.

Also ran some techron through the car. It's running great. Took it for a drive around town enjoying sounds and sensations of a vintage 911. Life is sweet!

Take care,

Roger

Hah, no matter how many times I change the oil, I always find a way to make some bit of a mess, usually by dropping the drain plug into 8 quarts of oil and having to fish it out, but I also have a habit of trying to rush to refill the tank and pouring 20W50 all over the right side of the engine bay.

Finally got around to replacing the front oil cooler lines and rear oil lines on the 87 Targa..Applying heat on the fittings , patience and some large ugly tools , got the job done .. Went from this ..
To this..

It took a full 8 hrs , but really satisfying recycling the old lines and fittings with new hoses and crimps..

Mess'n with the WUR

During my last test drive with the 911s I had a CIS Flare up (figuratively) where after getting on it the car began running as if the mixture was lean (several small backfires) until the car stopped idling. It ran normally after restarting but I didn't hit the loud pedal as hard for the rest of the drive. Decided those symptoms pointed to an issue with the WUR. Well today was WUR investigation day. My WUR rebuild kit hadn't arrive but decided to pull it out and see what might be going on.

Once it was out it became very plain what the most likely culprit was.

Without new gaskets I wasn't 100% sure how to proceed. Gave the inlet mesh filter a blast of carb cleaner and it looked like this.

I couldn't believe how much cleaner the mesh filter looked. The expectation was the debris was imbedded in the mesh and would be difficult to clean. As I didn't have gaskets in hand I decided to clean the mesh with a few Q tips and more blasts of carb cleaner. Also gave the fittings which fuel lines attach to a thorough brushing up and slapped the WUR back in the car. No more backfire after giving it the beans. All in all a satisfying day turning wrenches on the 911.

Roger

Spark Plugs - Not positive when they were done last, so fresh ones seemed in order. - should have done them when I had all the AC stuff out - would have saved some work

Did my first Oil Change at home - when they said the oil came out fast, I guess I didn't realize it was *that* fast! splashed out of catch container and all over the floor - lost half of it I think.... didn't get a picture of that though

I bought an AFR gauge and was working out the wire run. Went to check the speedo cable route to see if I could use that. Lifted off the shift linkage coupler cover and found where the mouse had made a nest this winter. Took a bit of time to clean that mess out. Now back to the original task.

AFR wires routing..

I routed 2 (two) O2 cables through the speedo boot and hole. They continue forward thru the tunnel until just passed the foot pedals. Both cables staying to the passenger side AWAY FROM ALL MOVING cables etc.
