To get 280 BHP from your 3.0, you will need:

46mm Webers or PMO's or an equivalent ITB system

11:1 CR

Twin-ignition

Custom cams (there are several choices)

A set of GOOD 1 5/8 headers with a proper race muffler

A host of oiling modifications

Close attention to engine assembly detail

Close-ratio gears to keep such an engine in its powerband

A GOOD oil cooling system to maintain oil temps at or below 200 deg F.

I had the same thoughts regarding my 3.2 and realized it was more cost efficient to just install a solid 3.6 with hydraulic lifters ...

Otherwise it's basically what Steve mentions plus a lot of $$$

Cheers

I am just amazed you had a spun bearing. Those 3.0 motors are rock solid. I do agree with masses however. Drop in a 3.6 and toughen up the gearbox.

Put your stock 3.0 back together and sell it to help offset the cost.

Anything else is an expensive proposition

Make it a 3.2 (or 3.3) short stroke and you'll find it easier to hit 280. There's an old adage that says no substitute for displacement/cubic inches.

Very true. That's a given on these engines. If you ain't willing to spend the bucks, the stock power will have to be sufficient. There's no secret cheap path to eeking power out of these motors that hasn't been tried already.

Could do a mild turbo installation too. That isn't exactly pocket change either.

hey kevin

what r my options on going bigger, ive been brought up racing 2 stroke dirt bikes and doing vintage road racing, there we could just bore out the cyl,and achieve greater diplacement,as of now the engine is on the stand, cases r split, just trying to get some detailed build ideas, ive thought i saw somebody using 3.2 cyls. and boring them but i think i'm goining the je piston way, any camm suggestions, oh by the way this will be a strret motor with weekend auto x man it sukks being a power junkie anyway thanks man

280 is pretty ambitious. I put some new jugs (nickies) on mine and went the 3.2SS route. Twin plugs, elgin mod-s cams, 46mm PMOs, SSIs. I went with 9.8:1 compression since it is a driver/street car and I wanted to use pump gas. I'm doing 228hp/210ft-lbs at the wheels on a dynojet. That would be something like 260hp at the crank.

In the end, it probably would have been cheaper to drop in a 3.6. But, I wanted the "old-school" look and be able to have built it myself. Plus, I have the peace of mind knowing exactly the state of all the innards of my engine.
