Grant, i have seen targa hard tops go for $300.00, $800.00 and $1200.00 it seems to be just how bad someone wants one. There is a guy on the bbs thats looking for one , go to the classified and find his want ad.

I'll swap my convenient soft folding top for your cumbersome outdated hard top. I won't even ask for any additional monies!
![]() I think the agreed fair price for a Hardtop in good condition is around U$2000.

Jerry, you've got a hard top on an SC? How is the fit? I've heard that the latches are different on latter cars, and that they're the same and no mods need be made. What's the truth.
I've been looking for a hard targa as well and have a standing $2000 offer out there, but nothing will ever come of it - fact is, most hard top owners decide to keep it once they discover how valuable and desirable they are. In all my time on the board, I think there've been a dozen or so threads like this, with never a top sold by the guy who had it. We'll likely see a decent aftermarket top before we see one sold on the board. Emanuel

I paid $2500 for my top from PartsHeaven, although the local Porsche junkyard (Silver Star) only asks $1500. Unfortunately, they didn't have any in stock.
With that in mind, I think you'll probably bogey on the hard-top-vs-cab swap, but it has to be better than my double-snowman. It looks like I started a fad with this targa->cab conversion thing

Emanuel, the factory hard top used different latches for some reason probly cost as the hard top latches are much cheaper to replace. The hard top latches have a hook that catches into holes in the vertical face of the windshield header in stead of the normal targa latch that goes into a slot on the horizontal section of the header. I bought new latches about 3 years ago from the porche dealer and they said they have many in stock, but no other parts or whole tops. New latches were only like $25.00 each quite a differance fron the reg targa latch
[for all of you that are thinking -i'll just replace my old ,broken latch w/ one from the hard top--they are not interchangable} I am still working on an answer to reproducing the hard top and may have a prototype in a few months. I will not be cheap but it will be porsche oem quality. Jerry |

Jerry,
If one were to find a hard targa top (or use one that you can hopefully produce) how would it attach to the windshield header of a car with only the horizontal slots? Are there separate bolt-on vertical hole parts? Did the cars that originally came with hard targa tops have both types of attachment points on the windshield header? Thanks, Markus

The windshield frame has the cutouts for the fiberglass Targa top latch points. You can feel them if you press on the vinyl covering. The latches are very similar to the 914 style of latches. A small metal reinforcing/trim plate fits over the cutouts (part number 911.565.221.40) on each side of the windshield frame. The fiberglass top fits up to 84 or 85 when the fram was changed for the new roller latches. The fiberglass top was discontinued by Porsche in 75 due to the power brake booster no longer leaving enough room to store it under the front hood.
I was planning on finding a factory fiberglass top, but I sold my SC and purchased a 996. I really miss the Targa though. |

Thanks for the replies,I would like to do the conversion and have the targa to cab instructions (courtesy of Tyson) But I still would like to find the top parts north of the border as our dollar really sucks and I still hurt from the last time I ordered south of the border and UPS had a crack at my backside.

Yes, Thom it make your car run cooler .The top is coated with aluminum that reflects 99% of the heat , so the air passing over the top on its way to the engine bay in is 40 degrees cooler when it enters the engine producing lower engine temps, although in your case this probely won't work due to the slower atomic movement in your neck of the woods.
My top really does keep the cabin cooler in the summer due to a 1/2 " layer of dense foam on the inside. I also may add that i make 10 other products for porsches that have nothing to do with engine cooling. Jerry |
