Oil Leaks and smoke
First time posting for me. I can't thank Wayne and all the people on this forum for help I have received looking here for answers. I have been restoring a 74 911 for 7 years now. I bought a used 78 3.0 with 100,00 miles on it 5 years ago. I have been rolling the crank ever since to keep things from rusting. I put the engine in after replacing every seal I could. I think I may have screwed up by adding 14 quarts of oil? I read the capacity in the manual? I started it up yesterday for the first time and smoke galore! also leaking oil from the exhaust manifolds where the meet the muffler and oil leaking from the crank seal area? I am hoping I just overfilled the oil? On start up I had the oil press gage pegged at 140 lbs.! After a couple of runs the press dropped to 60 lbs. but the leaks continue, engine at 140 degrees. What do you think?

Usually it takes about 10 qts to start with, then run the car to temp and check level. I will bet that nuclear cloud was fun to look at. Are your neighbors close :=)

Mine did the same thing for about twenty minutes. Smoke and oil everywhere but I only put in ten quarts so get under there and drain a bit out and pressure wash or degrease and hose it off and start over. Don't worry, if you replaced all the seals it just may be a matter of letting things warm up and finding their seal. I wouldn't panic too much.

Panic is right. I had the rebuild the entire engine nightmares last night. It sounds like 10 quarts is the way to go, I probably flooded the exhaust galley and the oil is coming out of the exhaust valve guides, I hope. Porshecar guy, I had so much smoke poring out of the garage I had to go outside and hope the neighbors didn't call the fire Department!

I would drain the oil, and start over at 9 quarts. Let the smoke burn off, or drive it off (if it is in drivable condition) and then check for correct level.

I just noticed I left out one important word in my post. It was "enough"! I can't thank Wayne and all the people on this site ENOUGH for all the help and guidance. Also thanks to the recent replies, back to work so I will try the suggestions this weekend.

If you have a pump fluid evacuator then suck about 4 quarts from the reservoir.
A rebuild normally smokes some as it beds in....you just helped out by forcing oil about everywhere. You need to clean out your air box etc too and wash off the block as that really lingers if you don't. |

Reiver, thanks for the info. I have a transfer pump I will try this weekend. Hope to see you on the road soon, paint and suspension work and a few dozen odds and ends left for me.
