1983 SC seat removal

I am trying to get the seats out of my 1983 911 SC. I can get to the front mounting bolts, but I can't get the seat far enough forward to access the rear bolts with a socket wrench. Does anyone have any advice on how to do this? I purchased a special Sears socket wrench set that was lower profile, but even this won't work.

Thanks for your advice.

I think it's a 10mm bolt and nut, not an allen bolt. A ratcheting wrench will work for you - looks like a 10mm wrench or 'spanner' but has a the ratcheting mechanism built into it. I will fit between the seat and the rail better than a socket wrench.

Did you remove the front mounting bolts? Once you do you will be able to move the seats further forward, and be able to access the rear bolts. This is the opposite order specified in the Bentley manual, which is wrong.

removing SC seat

Yes, what Ed said. Remove the front bolts then slide the seats up further then you will should have more access to the rear bolts.

Shocking! An error in the Bentley manual? Say it isn't so...

And that's why I don't use the things...

For those keeping score, the bolts were changed when Porsche introduced the new generation of seats in 1985. So the SC era cars, and a few years prior to that, AND the first year of Carrera 3.2 production, used M6x16 hex head bolts. These happen to have 10mm flats on the heads and there were 4 of them. In 1985, they changed to M8x20 pan head screws that needed a hex key wrench to remove. And, there were now 6 of them per seat.

All of them are low profile, and of good quality, in case you ever were tempted to replace them with crap from a hardware store. Bolts with taller heads won't allow the seat to slide all the way.
