What Type of Oil Cooler is This?

In the Passenger fenderwell of my 81 SC RoW I have this oil cooler mounted. I know it is not the "trombone" cooler. What is the name of this one? Also, should I think about replacing it with a Carrera cooler w/fan, or a Mocal?

That's what's known as the 'brass tube cooler'

Ryan,
If and when you decide to upgrade to a carrera fin cooler, you should know that on Ebay the few brass cooler that have sold are in the 300+ range. They are highly sought after.
Good luck.

Ryan,

Ignore the post just above. These things are only scrap. Let me know if you're swapping it out, I'll throw it away for you for only $5.

Interest?

So by GB and MM's interest, does that mean that I have a pretty good part?
My oil temps never get too high, of course I have the STUPID SC oil temp guage that has no numbers. No one has answered whether or not I should think about a switch. I have no intention of keeping it stock (3.6 when she grows up), so should I consider the Mocal w/ a fan?

Ryan,
My 83SC has the same brass cooler, I have bought a new carrera
fin style cooler that has been sitting in a box for six months. I live in hot mugy florida but I dont drive the car to much in the summer months. I think that unless you drive in heavy stop n go driving than the brass cooler is fine. When you upgrade is when you will have to change the set up. I would stick to the Porsche oil coolers and not spend my money on aftermarket coolers.
IMO.

I 2nd that. Unless the car is running warm now I wouldnt change a thing. If you install a 3.6 you will need all the cooling you can get, maybe a cooler in each wheel or better yet a spolier mounted cooler.

I'm going with a Carrera style cooler. The 3.6 motor is on the way. The Brass row one that it is replacing is for sale, still.

If anyone wants to buy it.....

NapTownSpeedy:
You do know about the temp numbers hidden on the right side edge of your gauge, right? Take a look closely and you will see them. HTH

Temp #'s

I looked and couldn't see them. As I was reading another current thread, I must be running pretty cool. Unless I am in heavy bumper to bumper traffic for over 30 min, my needle doesn't get out of the white box. Even with spirited driving, maybe two needle widths above the box. I had no ideal that most cars operated around 9 o'clock. Yeah for the "brass row".
Plus my pressure when warm is just above 1 bar per 1000 rpm. All in all I'm happy.

Anyone out there ever installed a cooler and fan from a 964 into an SC? i'm told that it will fit if you have a 964 front bumper but is it any better than the stock cooler?

there's more surface area on the brass tube unit than the later carrera finned ones.

Keep what you have until you go with a 3.6. Even then you may just want to run another cooler in series.

Yes it can be done, but I was advised against it for a number of reasons, one of them being that they aren't really designed to handle rock impacts etc, unlike the SC and Carrera coolers...
