I want to edit music, voice-overs, add a custom logo as a watermark, and fast cut to still footage between moving shots. For aerial footage, I bought a helicopter called a "Phantom 2 Vision" since I do not have a Go Pro 3 and don't want to spend all that money on video transmitters etc. I found a 2 axis gimbal to mount the camera to, and will be able to shoot nice 1080p footage from an aerial platform as high as 200 ft or more. |

I think that a lot of good ideas have been brought up. In particular the length of the production. Unless you have pretty compelling footage, anything over 3 minutes is going to be too long for most people. Having a clear vision of what you want to portray is key, it's ok if a changes a bit during, but you need some sort of vision. Don't dwell too long on any particular scene, keep it snappy, with a feeling of rhythm. It doesn't matter as much what you shoot with, most modern camera's will yield a good result. The set-up and lighting are your key factors. You want the light to be long and mild, early morning or evening is best.
Take your time, these things can't be rushed, most importantly have fun!!! |

Thanks jsbfoto!
rusnak, your aerial footage "tool" sounds pretty cool, be sure to share your results if you like them! I saw a video recently of a "drone" with a GoPro over some dolphins and whales…quite a unique perspective. Would be great to see our cars from above!

Final cut Pro is a shadow of what it was and I would not touch it.
Avid is great. Adobe Premiere is excellent as is Sony Vegas

D&J, I am nowhere near that level. So far I have a lot of cool footage of "fly aways" where the drone ignores the wi-fi signal and takes off. There is a failsafe mode that brings it back home and lands it. It's really neat. I'm actually thinking 60 seconds is about the right length of time unless you're doing a documentary type shoot. |

By far one of my favorite Pcar videos:

Brilliant stuff - I would like to record road trip to Le Mans this year. Can this be done with an iPhone and suitable attachments?

Yeah, the key to iPhone shooting is a good mount, even when hand holding. Basically, the closer your hands are to the phone, the more likely it is to pick up motion / vibrations. If you're serious about it, check out this 13 min video on shooting with the iPhone. It's cinematic shooting, but still has a lot of good tips. (skip to 2:30 into the video unless you want to watch their goofy short film…mount discussion starts at 9:11.)

If I can get a good mount I might just try this as I'm not looking for professional quality just something to capture the vibe of the trip...

A newer iPhone is an HD video camera, so if you think of your total video as a number of 2-5 second video snapshots, it's entirely possible. It's a lot of editing, but in the end it'll be worth it. Good luck!

I personally would not us a phone to shoot a video.
Use a real camera....don't waste your time.

Hi everyone
There's some really nice clips here & I wish I'd seen them a few months back for inspiration. I've recently helped shoot two clips for a porsche venture that's just got up & off the ground. We had two guys on cameras during the day & a bunch of mates driving the cars. I was stuck driving the family suby around with the photo & video bloke. Not really a massive hardship - was fun to watch. Interestingly, most of the footage that was used was taken from car mounted cameras but there was a lot of shooting from the side of the road that didn't make the cut. Cliff to Coast Sports Car Drives - Full Length - YouTube I'd be most interested to get people's opinions on the clip (shorter version on our site). Cheers, Gav

Some really nice videos here and I wish I'd come across this thread a few months back when looking for inspiration. I recently help shoot a Porsche vid for a new driving based company. We had two camera guys (one still, one vid) about a dozen mates and 5 Porsches. Interestingly most of the footage that made the final clip was shot from on or in the cars but there was a lot of stuff taken from the side of the road that got edited out.
I'd be interested to get people's take on the 2min clip (a shorter version is on our site - also taken on the same day) Cliff to Coast Sports Car Drives - Full Length - YouTube Gav

Nice one Gav. I thought it was pretty good. I probably would have muted some of the wind noise from the camera but otherwise I liked it. Are you on PFA in Aus?

Thanks for the feedback Simon.
I've not been in the past (unlike here where I was registered under a previous name). I think I will register on pfa as a paid participant, given the nature of what I'll be discussing. Seems like it's a bit more active than the Aus forum here on Pelican & many of the people posting on pfa I recognise from 8 - 10 yrs ago on the Aus forum here. Gav

Here's one I just shot for a car that is for sale, tried to take a creative angle with it. It's going to be presented with stills and details of the car. The video is designed to whet the appetite so to speak.
