Call a couple places where they restore older cars - they might be interested. The older cars used R12 and they like to keep it original - or you can post it on craigslist -

just out of curiosity, is it even legal to sell this stuff (ebay or otherwise?)

thanks,

Ron
Yeah but you need an EPA 609 certification to buy it. $20 test fee and it's open book.

I find it very interesting that Porsche now recommends 20W-50 for all engines up to 2.7 l, and fully synthetic 10W-60 for everything 3.0 l and above, basically anything turbo and SC or newer. Their reasoning is tighter tolerances on the 3.0 and above engines:

LMFAO.........that's exactly what i thought as well. And the 10-60 is full synth. Is it better than Brad Penn 20-50 Blend........let the fun begin. I just want the can. And the cool retro-looking oil service tags.

Regular Porsche list on this item is only $11.83 for the 20/50, and $15.55 for the 0/60.

Why does Porsche want me to put a full synthetic oil in 78 911? Puddles?

Because Porsche made your car and their engineers feel it is the best possible oil for your older 911. Remember Porsche makes cars that cost a million dollars. I'm sure they know more about oil than we forum folks.

According to a representative from Germany who gave a talk at the PCA Parade, the 20W50 has proper amounts of Zn and P (around 1500 ppm I believe- you can have too much so 1500-1800 is the sweet spot), slightly more than the 10W60 full synthetic (since that has to work with cats). They did a survey of what oils people used and did not want to just recommend Brad Penn for some reason. They wanted to blend in just the right detergents, anti-wear additives, anti-oxidents, etc. and they felt all the other oils were lacking (really that is just why they made their own blend rather than just marking up Brad Penn and putting it in a cool bottle). They had originally approached Mobil 1 about doing this oil but Mobil said the volumes would be too small so they gave permission for Porsche to go ahead with their own blend, even though all the new cars get Mobil 1.

The interesting thing is that he said that concern over Zinc and Phosphorous is only an American issue. No one really pays any attention to it in Europe apparently.

I was very impressed with Porsche Classic, such as how they got the old stamping tools for the remanufactured panels. They brought in guys who had retired and had worked on the 356 line for the restoration shop.

Did the rep say how much Zn and P in the 10W60? It sounds like it could be great for an SC or Carrera. OTOH, I don't see much difference in clearances between a 2.4 and a 3.0 engine, so I am not sure why the change in oil specs. Might it just be a concern about the catalytic converters?

And finding nothing but Pennzoil containers.

Just kidding. I know dealers would never do that.

Correct, and I understand that it is a particularly unsightly oil which is also more prone to leakage?!?!

1.Trader- I just got some new tires, so yes, I will take your german air!

2:Ronnie, dont worry, porsche has you covered too. It made an oil for your 4 speed. It cost $80,000 a quart. Just to be clear, that's 11 quarts of wait and one quart of kaboom!

3.Has anybody figured out what oil they are rebranding yet?

Thanks,
Ron
