targa inferior????
the more i peruse the 911 forums here, i'm always a little disappointed to see that the targa's always seem to be the red headed step child. am i missing something here or just plain stupid. i bought my targa because i wanted an open roof car in florida, without the noise and nuisance of a cabriolet. not that there is anything wrong with a cabriolet.
is my targa inferior or undesirable people because its a targa? is my 3.2 targa not as good as the other 911's of it's era? or is it just typical bull**** of others who think their 911 is better than yours. blah blah blah.....just wondering.

I don't think it's inferior. I had a targa and the open top didn't do anything for me. I prefer the coupe because the lines are more appealing to my eye. I think a duck tail on a targa really improves the look.

They look different. Preference is all it is. Some prefer to go topless, others don't. If they weren't popular they would have stopped making them after a year or two...
The Targa top is an expensive maintenance item as with age they leak. There is more body flex in the Targa, they are noisier on the road. I love mine with the top on or off. And I really love having the option to make that choice.

I've only ever wanted a targa, and that's what I bought. If you like your targa, screw everyone who doesn't!!!!!!!!!'

Well, they do usually resell for less money than a similar coupe. This implies something about how desirable they are. Other than that, I don't see anything wrong with them.

Two types of people in the world: those that like Targas and them that don't.
I think the 911 Targa will continue to grow in popularity relative to coupes as the cars get older. Why? They cease being track toys and become weekend cruisers. Look at how 356 prices changed over time. As they aged, the Cabriolets started out as the "red headed stepchild" but now are the queen of the ball.

Nothing better than driving up and down hwy 1 next to ocean and through the redwoods with the top off. I guess part of it depends on where you live, and the climate. For me, and my location, targa or convertible. Hard top feels like My regular car. With the targa i feel like i am on vacation every time i get behind the wheel. Of course personal preference. I am not a racer although my targa and its redone suspension with bump steer, handles beautifully at 90 mph on the back roads. Lots more from where that came from, but I am chicken and not a speed demon.
They are all sweet fun cars, but for me... Targa! |

I have 2 longhoods - A coupe and a Targa......I bought the Targa firest because:
I had many sports cars over the years and decided to get into Porsches on the cheap in the late '80's....A 912 coupe with a rusted out floor pan for $1,800.....After doing the pan, paint, interior and carb rebuilt, I had the following impression: An sports cars should have more power than a 912 and I should be able to take the top off..... Sold the 912 right off and got the '73.5 Targa in 1990......Love story ever since........ ....ain, ,a

As everyone likely knows, Porsche is bringing back the targa to their current model line up and it's nice to see it's a real targa... not just a coupe with a big sunroof. I think this will add value to the earlier targas as newcomers to the brand look back at the heritage. I try not to get hung up on all the chatter about the pros and cons either model, I love my '77 targa for what it is... a porsche 911.

Strange thing is I was never a targa fan until owning a coupe for a few years. Don't get me wrong, I love my coupe, but now I'd like to have a targa to park along side it. One of each just seems perfect. Now when talking about the new 911s; I think the new targa is one of the most amazing looking cars ever built. I'd have one of those over a new 911 coupe in a heartbeat. My least favorite: 996 convertible. Ironic thing is that's the car my father-in-law owns and he is just sure I'll keep forever once he passes away. (Sorry Pops, its getting sold for funds to make my SC exactly how I want it. Or money towards a Targa...)

The new Targa is incredible looking. Porsche has done a great job with it. I love my Targa. I can get the feeling of an opened air car, but at the same time don't feel as cramped inside as with a coupe. Personal preference! My car will be with me until I die!

Both, all, fine vehicles for a desired purpose...Targa, Coupe, Cabriolet.
The definitive Porsche is a track/race/sports car. Cutting a gap in the body (Targa/Cab) reduces the overall effectiveness of the design and that is the difference that equates to purity to some. |

One more vote for the targa. I love the lines of the coupe but these are summer cars for me up in the great southern north so I cherish the 3 months I can drive with the top off. I recently sold my 77'911 Targa and loved every time I got in it. I owned at the same time, and still do an 84' Cab. With the Top off it is pure freedom in driving and as close as I will ever get to driving a motorcycle. I don't usually drive it unless the weather permits me to take the top off. I never noticed if they flex too much because I, like 95% of owners, don't race mine. They still handle awesome. A Porsche owner should never criticize another Porsche. They are all worthy of nothing but praise.

if you arent tracking the car seriously and we are not talking 930s, i think a longhood targa is the sweetest thing out there. i own 2 coupes, a 71 targa and a cab from your cars era and theyre all fit for purpose. enjoy
