911 carrera cruise control

1988 911 blew a fuse and cruise stopped working. Replaced fuse, it worked for a while, then stopped without blowing fuse. Tried to follow "Troubleshooting Auto Speed Control" in tech manual 6.6-1/5, but am confused. Ohm from term 3 of regulator plug to ground gets nothing, term 3 to7 is off scale when using X10 setting on meter, term 11 to ground is off scale, term 6 to ground is off scale. Ignition now on, Voltmeter between 6 & ground is nothing, term 9 with swith up gets nothing, term 8 and moving switch to wheel should be dead and I get meter to go up (not sure how to read true # on calibrations. Term 10 with switch down is nothing. Does anyone know from this info what I need to replace? Thank you in advance. Glenn
You will need to refer to manual to see what they say readings should be & what the problem is when they differ.

Glenn--using your meter on OHMS scale while the battery is still connected is a NO-NO! The only way you can go off scale on OHMS is that there is voltage in that circuit--and that has probably ruined the shunt resistors in your meter. Am assuming you're using an Analog meter. If it is analog, put it on Rx1 (or R) and grab a meter lead end in each hand. If you can budge the needle with the resistance thru your body then you've blown the shunts. If you can't move the needle then you've escaped this time. You shouldn't be able to tick the needle until about RX100 or Rx1000.
Go back and disconnect the NEG post of the battery and try your tracing again. Also--you'll want to separate the wires when there are more than one on a post to eliminate back circuits. With the battery connected--do all your checking on the 12 VOLT scale.

When I saw the needle moving I disconnected quickly & saved the meter. Did not know the battery should be disconnected for the ohms check.
Needle doesn't move on X10, but does slightly with X1K with your test so guess the meters ok.
Suprised the manual did not tell me to disconnect battery. They do mention to turn ignition on for voltage checking. I'll recheck tomorrow when the mosquitos aren't as bad & let you know if the manual procedure is more successful. Thanks alot, Glenn

Still no sense with the electronic check. Decided to check the lever contact with clutch depression, the switch wasn't making contact. Put a string on the lever and pulled it while driving and the system worked fine. Loosened the 2 bracket nuts, slid the switch forward and I'm back up. Thank you all for your help. Would like to understand why the electrical check did not work. Glenn
