He posted a lots of good info and advice but I especially remember his comments in the "4 cam Carrera engine" thread.

He went out of his way to help those people. Even meeting up with them in Denver.
A true "Old School" gentleman and enthusiast... He'll be missed around here.

Gods Speed Mr Clay. RIP

Sad to hear this. Haven't posted in quite a while but checked in from time to time and was wondering why he hadn't posted in a while. May God bless his soul indeed. A very kind and helpful man.

Just saw the news on Pelican's Facebook post

I had the honor of meeting Grady when he set up a Pelican GTG/camp somewhere in the high mountains of Colorado during my cross country roadtrip on 9/1/04. He even cooked breakfast for us the following morning, and was very amused at my mom using chopsticks with bread (see pic). I was amazed by his generosity and wealth of knowledge (didn't quite know at the time just how much he knew) not to mention his eagerness to share and help...I will never forget him.

A few days later while making a stop at my aunt's place in Cupertino, CA I discovered that the left rear wheel bearing had pretty much disintegrated. I was determined to change it out myself, and even bought a bearing and an used banana arm at PartsHeaven when Grady called and convinced me that I was probably way over my head having never done it before, and that given the situation it would be best to just take it to a shop. Good thing I listened, since there ended up being a lot more that was damaged than just the bearing. After getting back home to Hawaii he sent over a couple of posters including one of his former shop, which I promptly sent back and requested an autograph. Never did get it back unfortunately, and man, I sure wish I still had it, and wish I kept in touch with him. RIP Grady, you will be missed.

Unhappy

Sad news indeed...
A great Pelican that produced the most detailed and well structured posts to help the less knowledgeable. Outstanding fellow, my best to his family and may he rest in peace.

Whoa. I've been spread a little thin lately, but saw the nicely done banner at the top. Shocked isn't sufficient to capture my feelings.
I, like many others, have read his postings for years now. (over a decade I'd guess, for me) Never met him, but boy, did his personality and knowledge come through in his posts...

The one thing that really struck me was how he must have had 28 hours in HIS days. His posts were SO detailed, backed up with photos and links and workshop pages to go to......they clearly were the works of significant time. But- he had a full life as a shop owner and mentor and he was building a race car for his stepson....heck, I don't know where he found the time! Me? I never get my laundry done, much less write what is essentially a book of useful posts on this site!

My other takeaway was his generosity. The stories I heard, such as the shop party to show the "Le Mans" film at Christmas, plus his support of the young student (college isn't cheap!!!) and on and on....

As Wayne has pointed out, it's getting to be a trend here...Warren, Ron from LI, now Grady...

I guess the silver lining is that when we lose a member like Grady is shows that this forum is far more than a bunch of bits and bytes on the internet, it's an actual community. A far flung community, but one nonetheless.

Godspeed, Grady, and thanks for enriching our world.

So sorry to hear of Grady's passing, he was a generous man, whenever someone was in need of his wisdom. He was of great assistance during my stewardship of the 550A and four-cam engines. RIP Grady!

Jake,
Very well put. Grady, godspeed.
No one will ever replace the gentleman, but maybe as a tribute to Grady, maybe we can all carry on with the side of Grady that put a smile on our face, felt the warmth of his generosity and awe of his knowledge.

This is how Grady got involved in my cross country road trip three years ago. I knew from this post that he really was checking in with my thread each day. He PMd me his phone number in case I had problems and needed help. This to a complete stranger... A wonderful soul indeed. I wish my son and I could have stopped for a visit with him....'

Eastern Washington, yes –desolate.
More starkly abused than the Badlands of SD.

These are the Channeled Scablands where Glacial Lake Missoula emptied with volume of water equal to Lake Michigan ALL AT ONCE and repeatedly.

In the town on Missoula, MT, there are ancient shorelines WAY up on the mountainside (near the ‘M’).
Each shoreline represents an annual shore of the rising water of the last flood (~20K years ago).

This flash flood overtopped the Columbia River Gorge at the peak flow.
Where you are standing, the water was 100’+ deep and flowing 100 mph for a few days/weeks!

There are some great PBS and other videos on this subject, available on-line.

Wow, I just checked in a learned of Grady's passing. He was a great example of a mentor to many of us. He and I spoke on many occasions and he spoke about helping children in need. He was a foster parent to at-risk youth, of which his golden heart extended beyond reach.

We finally met in person at a group run in Pasadena, California with several other Pelicans. He showed us his childhood home, and somehow I persuaded the current owners to let us tour it. He lit up like a shining star! I will cherish his memory and salute him.

Godspeed my friend, David

Grady was exceptional in so many ways. I only had contact with him a few times but always found him beyond generous. So sad. Nothing else to say other than "God Bless you Grady Clay..." You won't be forgotten.
