Battery terminal bolt head scratcher

I'm trying to take my battery out and I'm stuck on step 1, loosening the battery terminal bolts. I can't see how to fit a wrench in there (the Interstate battery is big).

Is there something obvious I am missing? I'm having trouble even seeing how the previous owner got it in like this in the first place.

1986 Coupe, I've had it for a year, this is my first time taking out the battery.

loosen the nut side with a box wrench, I like to use the Sears wrench or the OEM 13MM box wrench, they are a bit skinner.

Caveat, just remember not to over torque it when you install the OEM terminal have weakened over time and may fracture and give you a short. Ask me how I know

The 13mm OEM box wrench was enough to get the positive terminal disconnected, thanks!

The negative side still doesn't have enough wiggle room. I can drill out the bolt, if no one has a better idea.

I have to use a flex-head ratchet with a very short extension to get to it.

I also used hb's S box wrench. You are correct very little room, I usually turn 1/8 at a time.

Got it! I switched from using a 3/8" drive ratchet to 1/4" and that gave me just enough wiggle room to mount it. Thanks for the help.

But the battery still doesn't want to come out! There's no obvious hold down. I do see a torx screw that might be holding it down. Does that sound familiar to anyone?

The bottom of the battery sits under the chassis lip/ledge hold down. So slide forward then lift but the battery will need to come out in an angle, I know silly but that is german efficiency for you.

I couldn't get it to budge at all, in any direction. I'll take another look tomorrow.

I have that 6mm allen bolt loose, but it appears that the A/C condenser blower (911-624-013-01) is in the way. It's wedged right up to the battery. Is that the normal location for it? Can I just unscrew the phillips head screws I see to move it out of the way? The previous owner put some kind of gooey tape on the base of the blower, any idea why he would have done that?

I don't think I ever removed the blower to get the battery out but it is tight. The "tape" is the air seal. You should disconnect the ground first, then the positive. Less sparks. A set of stubby wrenches helps. Ken

Got it out. Also picked up a 13mm stubby box wrench that I'll keep in the emergency toolkit. Thanks for the help, everyone.

The gooey stuff should be a gasket.

I always remove the blower when I change the battery.
