As others have said - if the car already gets regular exercise you'll know of any issues. If it sits all the time and you decide to go on a big trip -that's a crap shoot.
Personally I love road trips. Took my '91 Turbo (80,000 miles) on a 1500 mile road trip in Summer '13 - not a single issue. Just took the car on a 800 mile all mountain pass, scenic byway, twisty 2 lane roads - didn't miss a beat - ran perfect every second. That said - I like to bring: various vacuum hoses, hose clamps and/or zip ties, some electrical wire and a few connectors, air compressor, extra oil, and some tools - screw drivers and wrenches and such - just basic stuff in case something gets loose. A big repair - not much you can really do, realistically. Again IMO the key is having a car that sees regular use and you'll be fine.

I would say that my list is a little excessive for a roundtrip road trip. But in my defense, I am just getting the car back together after 12 years of being in pieces. The car is going to Florida on a one way trip and I do not have any of those items in my garage in Florida. I certainly have confidence in the road worthiness of my 80SC since I am the one who rebuilt the engine and rebuilt the car. All would be grand to just grab a bag of jelly bellies and my favorite tunes on my Itouch and haul ass. Unfortunately, eventually all of those items will be needed at some point in the future.
I did like the comment of the duck tape being used to quiet down the passenger if you have to have one.

I live in Atlanta and have done yearly trips to Pa to the Hershey Swap meet and then onto other places in Pa. Round trip after visiting folks in Pa around 2400 miles.
While traveling I carry socket set, box end wrenches, assortment of screw drivers, pliers, channel locks, crescent wrenches and vice grips. In addition I carry spare fuses, relays, multi-meter and fuel injection pressure tester along with P-car book and wiring diagram. Also carry one spare fuel injection hose for the fuel distributor and some fuel injection tubing with some hose clamps. The main reason I do this is should the P-car break down, I want to be able to at least make a temporary fix so that I can get to a place to make permanent repairs. Also, should the P-car need to be towed to a garage I will be able to at least tell the mechanic what the problem may be without him having to scratch his head wondering where to start, because he never worked on a older P-car. In the five years I have been traveling to Hershey, Pa, I have never been stranded on the side of the road in the middle of nowhere. The P-car never broke down on me. Now that is not to say I had a transmission seal leak along the way or having to remove the gas tank after I arrived in Pa - return line inside the gas tank blocked up. It's comforting to know that you have the necessary tools on board to do minor repairs without having to towing it to a garage because you don't have the tools you need to at least diagnose the problem.

Brilliant! The roll of duct tape also doubles as a cup holder.

All packed up and ready to go! If anyone's in the Prince George and Edmonton area, or on the way, let me know! Would love to chat with local Pelicanites along the way

Well, just shy of 2000 miles total but what a trip! The pcar loved every mile, although with the bike and box on top, really didn't want to go any faster than 180 km/h - not that I tried of course...
Best part? I didn't even need to use any of the tools/parts/gas I brought. Only time being when I rolled my buddy's side by side... Least it wasn't the Pcar, but just as expensive it seems. Here's a quick pic when I was cruising through Jasper, AB. Road was blocked due to wildlife up ahead, which always equals photo ops!

Great! Yeah I've done many 1000+ mile trips (and a few 3000+ mile ones) and last season, first real issue I had was a seized caliper... but you can't realistically be equipped for that possibility. I travel light, with a fanbelt, Porsche tool kit, DME relay, oil and brake fluid, and BCAA and Visa cards. Like Graham says, when a car gets to a certain age, the garage queens seem to be the least reliable. My wife and I are going to the southern BC Interior at the end of the week with only my regular touring stuff....touch wood LOL.

I admired your tenacity. But, that poor Porsche and the load on its roof. I would have brought a station wagon.

Bring a LED test light. Get the LED type, available at Walmart for less tha $5.00.
The LED needs very little current to turn it on so it works great for testing Ref and Speed sensors on the 84-89 cars. It's just a simple 12vdc test light but uses a very low current LED.

But, to carry an assortment of parts and tools will certainly guarantee an event-less trip.
