Drag Night

Just got back from the drag stip - nothing quite like putting on women's clothes and driving really fast!

First off, I've found the center of the Blingiverse, at least in NorCal. I felt old and plain. Lots of little hotties running around - that almost makes it worthwhile.
I only got 3 runs in before I bailed - there was a lot of sit-around-and-wait, got tired of it.
  • 13.756@100.58 .887 reaction, 2.12 60'
  • 13.587@101.45 .807 reaction, 2.06 60'
  • 13.478@99.95 1.21 reaction(!), 2.03 60'
This was my first time at a drag strip, and wasn't fully clued in on how things worked. Like pulling forward until the staging light comes on - nobody told me about that! Or about the other lane getting the green before mine, which distracted me on the last run. Oh well.

I wasn't too hard on the machinery - I was launching @ 2500RPM - nothing heroic. I used my Kumho Victoracers on the rear, RE730 street tires on the front. I started off 30PSI and tried bleeding down to 28, but I was getting wheel hop - I think I'd rather have the wheel spin than the hop.

The best ///M3 (E36) came in at a blistering 14.5

I used to do the OCR (Orange County Racewaypark) thing for a few years back in the 70s! Bracket racing every Wed night and Saturday. Your e.t.'s are respectible although inconsistent, but you react like a deer in the headlights!

A good reaction time is as close to .400 as possible without being under (or you'll red light).

Staging the car... generally a mind game as to who stages first, but always stage very "lite". That is, inch up just enough to barely trip the second staging beam. This gives you more of a rolling start, which leads to better E.Ts

Your e.t. slips just look like grocery tapes on this box, so just take some pictures of the hotties next time. It'll be easier on your clutch!

Ideal reaction times are typically.400 for Pro classes (NHRA / IHRA) and .500 for sportsman (bracket) classes so you did pretty well considering first time out. Low 13s is excellent for a street car that can take corners as well.

That just can't be. . . . . . it would mean those three pages of guys, telling Kurt B there is no way he beat an M3, were WRONG
14.5

BTW; that thread got moved to the M3 form .

Thanks Thom! . . .and unlike others here, I, for one, am thankful you didn't post pictures of the "hotties" in drag.

E46 M3 = 333 hp.

jscript? What the hell is that?

!= is "not equal to" in C.

Young whippersnappers and their new-fangled high-level languages...

Thanks for the info Jim. Though in my book, an M3 is an M3. Yes I know, it over simplifies.
The thing is BMW, M-what-ever, is as inspiring to me as the PerrerVaggen with tons of HP.

I can certainly believe Kurts beating an M3. Big HP or not; the difference in drivers can easily make up the difference. The post calling him a "full of it" are way out of line. So when you have drag race dedicated M3's doing only 14.5, I can't help but smile.

In the M3's defense, not all M3's are created equal. For example, an E30 M3 couldn't hardly get out of it's own way; I drove one once, and ended up with bugs hitting the back window, it was so slow.

The E36 M3 in this excercise was bone stock 'cept for a K&B air filter. It was also his first time on the strip.

The != construct is common to most C-derived languages. (C++, Perl, Java, Python, csh,sh/ksh, etc)

"Blingiverse" is the single funniest thing I have read all week.

Bling is flashy, pimpy stuff. Blingiverse is an obvious extension.

from www.pseudodictionary.com:

bling - Money. Derived from the sound of a cash register opening.

ex. Q: You gonna buy those shoes today? A: Can't, got no bling.

bling bling - Super fly ultra dumb fresh.

ex. Just went to prate.com and it was bling bling.

bling bling - Gangsta jewelry .

ex. I'm all thugged up. Check out my bling bling.

bling-bling - Adjective meaning "the newest" or "the latest."

ex. Your watch is bling-bling. I wish I had one like it.

Thom,

Did your "rice" loving girlfriend take you to the dragstrip? Is she a fully converted Porsche lover yet or are you looking for a better model?

Pretty impressive times.

BSJ and Botman

"!" is used as "Not" in several languages, not just the old "C" or new "jscript". The "depth" of knowledge on this board (not just Porsche) amazes me. I doubt there isnt anything in the universe that someone on this board does not know something about.

Ummm...I think I'm qualified to post here - mostly because *I* was the one who went out to the track with Thom yesterday and ran the 14.5.

1. "Drag race dedicated"?? Hardly. It's a 100% stock '98 E36 M3 daily driver with only a K&N filter.
2. I'd never drag raced before. My reaction time was about 1.2 seconds 2 out of 3 runs. I suck.
3. I don't have $50,000+ invested in my my BMW, unlike Thom's 911. I have about half that. If I did, I could *probably* shave a second off of my 1/4 mile time, you think? Or I could buy another M3 and have a spare. Whatever. But it's not a drag racer. I only went out there as a data point exercise.
4. My car didn't have smoke billowing off of the engine.
5. My car has a usable rear seat, AC, Cruise, ABS, etc, etc. Thom's car is a street-legal track car, esentially.

It's apples and oranges here, folks. Don't get me wrong, I respect 911s, I would even go so far as to say I like them. But come on...comparing Thom's 911 to my M3 is idiotic at best.
