Great update, Kav. I've been looking forward to it!
Watching that process (and the frustration makes me wonder why the pin is there if you can't rely on it! Assuming the later model style cams with the bolt is no easier to deal with. Really there has to be an easier way! Especially since you have to re-do the process after sealant. I have a few of the same dial indicators as you - did you get the SIR tools Z-blocks from our host, and did the extensions fit the indicators well?

Trying to think of a way to avoid spending $154.00 on a tool to tighten the cam bolts on my 3.0...... I wouldn't have thought this would be so tricky before watching your video, so thanks again for sharing. All the best, Jon

Luftgekuhlt 6
I took a trip down to LA to check out Luftgekuhlt 6 in the fantastic location of Universal Studio's back-lot. It was my Luft and I have to say it was very good!
I made a video of the journey: My iPhone photos don't do it justice I'm afraid! ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]()

Man looks like an awesome event. Would've loved to get up close and personal with that Singer 911.
I've been lurking and following your thread for a while now. I have a 1980 911SC Targa that my dad bought off the showroom floor in 1979 and then gave to me with 235,000 miles on it in 2001. It is my intention to someday do what you're doing now. I want to pass on my condolences for the loss of your dad. I can only imagine how hard that must be. Just know that a lot of us out here have been inspired by and have gained a lot of knowledge from your videos and story, and that we are all with you in spirit if not in person.

Wow, what a thread. This is more of a seminar than a thread. Aren't we voting on best thread?
Congrats on having a daughter that has the bug. I never could get either of my kids involved. And my condolences on your father. I'm looking forward to seeing your car finished.

Thanks Fellas, it’s been more difficult than I ever expected losing my father, he was a very special person and he is always in my thoughts.
The Canary has been a great distraction over the past months and the progress has come along but it still feels like I’m winging it constantly so words of encouragement go a long way! Cheers! -Kav. |

Thanks for the great work and videos. They were very useful for other amateur hobbyists working on these cars.
I wish my workshop was as clean! |

Longblock
With the valve clearance checked I can seal up the longblock.
I made a little video of the process: Appling the Loctite 574 to the cam housings Torqued down the cam housing and then the heads. Chain housings installed. Curil-T on the camshaft housing end plates. Thrust washer, shims, woodruff key, sprocket flange, cam sprockets and idler arms. I set the timing again to 3.15mm for the E-cam. Priming the hydraulic chain tensioners I decided to upgrade to Supertec's bronze idler arm bushings, I had to check the timing again Installed on the right side. (new o-ring not in this picture) Chain housing covers installed. |
