You say that the roll pin must be installed with the slit facing away from the center of the shock. Is this the "3 o'clock" position?

The slit needs to be on the spindle side of the shock. The o'clock position will be different depending on which side of the car you're working on

The slit will face inward, away from the shock shaft. Stick a punch in the hole first to be sure the notch in the shaft is going to be captured by the pin.
