It's probably an ST prototype test mule.

I've done a little digging. Apparently this car was the subject of one of Leonard Nimoy's In Search of... shows. What a great show that was!

Over on the Early S board a 912 fellow said it wouldn't be a 912. "It wouldn't be a 912 VIN. Like a 911, that would have 9 numbers in '69. 1290XXXXX."

That could be Mark, but this fellow Jim on Early S just posted this.

"It is the production number found under the lower right hand dash bolster and also under the shift coupler cover on cars built by Karmann. Nothing to do with the VIN on LWB cars.

Regards

Jim"

So either way, I have a good explanation.

Belongs to this beauty. I'm selling it for a friend.

I will admit that I'm reaching based on vapors. I love mysteries like this one and am still hoping for the billion dollar outcome!

Dave Pateman will know the real answer. It is a chassis number and not a vin. Dave usually can tell you within a month when it was made and +/-100 numbers what the actual vin would be.

As pors1968 & Matt Monson have said, it is a Karmann body #. In 1965 it started in the speaker recess on top of the dash, then moved the the tunnel opening in short order. Generally it is similar to the VIN, but not quite the same. In 1968 & 1969 it is shorter than the VIN. Basically from 1969 it is similar to the production # on the lower dash frame. I believe that sometime in 1970 or so it finally got in sync with the production #. I'd love to know the VIN for my research.
Dave

VIN for a 911T Coupe (Karmann).

3,561 produce so this one is late in the production year.

Engine would be type 901/16
