Just great...
Was looking forward to a long, quiet afternoon of working on the 911 engine and have run into some bad luck that I could really use some advice about.
My car is an '86 Carrera with 62k miles on it. I have the engine out to replace fuel and vacuum lines, do the usual "while it's out" oil leak prevention stuff, etc and today pulled valve covers to adjust valves... Yep, 3 exhaust head studs fell out. I know enough to know that repair is beyond my capabilities, so some questions: 1. Can anyone recommend a shop in the KC area who will do the work correctly and at a reasonable price? 2. What else should be done while the heads are off? Valve job and guides I assume? With my car's low miles, I wouldn't think anything else would be necessary? 3. What kind of head studs (bolts) are considered the best to use now? Thanks in advance for any advice...off to sulk now. |

Your looking at a top end rework, with heads rebuilt.
New steel lower studs are fine for a stock street engine tho the racy bits are gorgeous. Replace the 2 speed sensors on the flywheel and the cylinder head sensor on the drivers side head. Good luck!

Fell out? you mean they walked out with the nut/barrel nuts or literally dropped out?

This is not a hard job. I just completed my rebuild. Engine runs great. Get Waynes book and buy some tools. You will save thousands and have the satisfaction of doing it yourself. Every step is covered in the book from removal to break in. Follow it and you will be back on the road in a several weeks. Take lots of pictures to look back on when putting things back together. And get a good torque wrench! And go from this.

No need to tear down the low end, although it's really not much to it.
Replace the rod bolts with ARP. You cannot skimp on this. 993TT head studs are Divalar and are really tough. I have them for years running lots of boost no problem..Henry Schmidt makes good ones too. |
