Tilton starter
Does anyone know where I can buy one of the light weight Tilton type starters for my 1973 911? They don't seem to be available here at Pelican.
Thx. |

Actually the lightweight starter that Wayne carries is better than the Tilton, IMO.

Tilton? Starter
Alan Johnson USA (California) sells a high torque starter for the 911 for $495. Don't know if it is a Tilton.
I tried to get one for my 914 and sourced a VW parts warehouse selling a similar starter for $171 (Kustom 1 Warehouse, 1314 W. Collins Ave, Orange, CA 92867) but it didn't fit the 914 without some trunk modification (sheetmetal cutting-which I didn't do). Good Luck |

Far out - I'll sell 2kw starters for that money all day. I took my 0.8hp one into a local (here in New Zealand) place which basically custom makes starters. They started with a Nippon Denso 2kW one (about 2.7hp!), and custom machined the mounting plate to match my Bosch starter. NZ$350 + GST, or slightly under US$200 incl tax. It turns my 10.5:1 3.2 over ferociously.

Who has a number on the weight of a factory 911 starter (w/solenoid) ?
The one Pelican sells does look good at 8.1 lbs. But what does that compare to?

I dunno, but the Nippon Denso one was considerably lighter too (using the scientific "heft it in one hand" test).
I have the 0.8hp one at home and can weigh it. If I remember.

Just a guess, but I'd say a stock starter weighs 13-14 pounds.

This reminds me, I have a friend who was in the Alternator/Starter business for a while. He has a bunch of the high torque starters laying around but they have a different end on them so they can bolt to numerous different japanese cars. Any idea where I could get an end to adapt it to a 911? Who makes the starters for AJ and Wayne I wonder?

This sounds like what I ended up with - they simply made a Porsche specific aluminium end. The only other trick is to make sure it rotates the right way (transaxle gearbox). I really wish I had taken some pics...
