Knee Pads

Looking for recommendations for repro knee pads for a 73.5. The originals I have been able to locate are usually priced fairly high and will require refurbishing, so I am curious if anyone has experience with reproduction units. I know Mr. Fiat and Canford Classics both offer them. Thoughts? Comments? Words of warning?

Thanks.

Can't help with the question, but the thread title definitely conjures-up impure thoughts!

Well done!

Thin foam and vynil from Joann's Fabrics Superstores. Dead match for my '86, probably the same for your year.

I think EinMalig in Huntington Beach CA is reproducing them as well.

I don't see them listed on EinMalig's web site.

Hello,
Be careful when buying reproductions. Post 73 kneepads are slightly different from pre 73 ones as they leave a small gap between pad and dash. Most repros say they fit from 69 to 85, well you pays your money and takes your chance.

Thanks for all of the responses...including my fellow Texan from Rockwall.

D@vid, those do look nice, but a bit speedy for me at this point. Lakewell seems to be very well-respected for quality products.

Cooper911SC, I will check out the offering from EinMalig. Thanks.

Uwon, you mention thin foam and vinyl from Joann's. Did you use these to restore existing cores or did you fashion your own knee pads? Could I trouble you for photos? I just pulled AC vents and simply need something to clean up the lower dash for the time being.

Thanks to you all.

Metalmickey, I have noticed some discrepancy in how the units are marketed from different outlets and private sellers. Thanks for the heads up.

Made my own one piece job. Less than $20 in materials but a lot of work.

I should say it did! Would you be willing to share how you went about building it?

I have a set of knee pads that I covered in leather for a 'hot rod' build, but removed for a SWB one piece lower knee pad.

There are earlier and later knee pads and the gap around the ashtray is going to be larger with the later pads.

The one piece solution - factory or Maxem's - is superior because it's one less fiddly bit to avoid adjusting the ashtray, and who the hell still smokes and/or does it in a vintage 911?

bumping this thread as I would like to know more about the homemade one piece knee pad. I just purchased a 3rd knee pad side that I assume I will have to cut up for the "filler"

Nice looking one piece! Please enlighten us, how you do dat?

Looks sooo much richer and seamless than the original three piece and looks like stock SWB one piece. Please share your handwork. Well done!

Regards!

One way to easily distinguish the early kneepads (LWB up '73) from the later ('74+) is by looking at the front facing corners. The early pads have a radius in corner, where as the later pads have a sharp corner to accommodate the side window vent introduced in '74.

Later Kneepad:

This one piece knee pad is amazing. Wish the creator would have enlightened us. Custom or cut up a third pad to create
