Tail of the Dragon to Twin Cities 2016 Road Trip Thread
Flying down to AL tomorrow to gather up my '88, then hitting T ot D / Cherohala Skyway in East Tennesee / NC, then many windy roads all the way back up to Saint Paul, MN. PSYCHED.

OMG a friend shared a picture of THAT car with me day before yesterday (He's a big TodD fan, drives an orange Honda SI). Too funny.

Any and all road recommendations welcome - this is my first visit down there. I filled my phone app with promising looking routes, but not on the basis of anything but what the map looks like

There is also another "famed roadway" called "the devil's triangle" near here also. It may be worth a look http://devilstriangletn.com/ |

Love all those roads, have done them on my motorcycles many many times, and a couple in my M3, but never in my Porsche. The Army moved me to the PNW about 4 months before I finished the restoration. When I am stationed on the East Coast again, is a guaranteed destination.
+1 on the Cherohala and Foothills, they are much better roads for sweepers and speed. The dragons tail can be exhausting 318 turns in 11 miles. Nothing on the tree of shame for me, but I did have a bad wreck on the East bound Cherohala on a downhill reverse radius left hand turn, someone coming the opposite direction (drunken hilbillie in an old impala) came over the line, clipped me in a peg grinding lean and I low sided at about 80MPH. Full riding suit with padding, walked away with tons of bruising and two cracked vertebrae, mainly from bike tumbling on me. Sadly, this guy kept driving about a mile or two on the TN side hit a father and son on their Goldwings. The father lost his life, the son his legs.... A few times I was on my bike there must have been a P car group doing a run, passed about 75 911's 914's and others. Cant wait to get back East. HIGHLY recommend these roads.

Wow, heavy story Steve. That's brutal.
Hope you are enjoying the PNW, we lived in the Seattle area for about 10 years before Saint Paul. |

I just came back from driving the Dragon. No LEO at all that day. It's impossible to drive 129 and take photos all by yourself. You can rent a go pro, and there is a commercial photography service too. Also-if you intend to celebrate with a beer or a glass of wine in NC at the end of the day-BYO, because Robbinsville and the whole county are dry!
Have a great drive! |

Hey Scott, I work in oak ridge. Never seen your car around. Just did the devils triangle this past weekend.

Same here. We're from central OH and head that way just about every year. Kat's diner in Tellico Springs is the best. Warren

![]() The tail is something to drive and say "been there, done that." I drove it like the yellow line was a concrete wall. The curves are the reason to go, not see how fast you can make it. I did it on a weekday and the traffic was low. Only motorcycles blasting past me. There are better roads in the area than the tail. Keep it legal sane and stay safe and enjoy the drive.

I want to run it at least once, but then we'll see, maybe other roads in the area. Weather forecast for tomorrow is poor, but Friday looks better.
