Try rocking the car back and forth a bit while a helper moves the shifter. You'll need to investigate why it got stuck, though. I would start with the shifter bushings before digging into the internals.

Drain trans fluid and look for broken dog teeth in the fluid or on the drain plug. First gear dog teeth failure is not uncommon. Rob

I had a linkage pivot block come loose once, with similar result.
# 34 below. ![]() of course the problem could be anywhere along the linkage path. I would suggest checking the coupler (under the tunnel cover, behind/between seats.) Keeping in mind that 1st pushes that rod, and second pulls (read: can pull out, leaving it stuck in 1st)

Shift rod coupler came off the splined shaft or shift rod bushings are bad.

Yeah, never had one firmly stuck in 1st. If you had mentioned that the shifter moves in the original post, we could have arrived at the bushing diagnosis earlier.

Mine stuck in reverse. The car would move backwards but when I selected a forward gear I could stall the engine. The transmission was locked. I pulled the inspection plate at the tunnel and could see the shift rod had about 3/8" of exposed clean metal on the spline shaft indicating the shift coupler had lost its grip on the rod. After adjusting the tunnel shift rod and tightened the coupler again. Problem solved Hopefully yours is as simple as mine was. |

greyes; are your back-up/reverse lights on (with ignition on, of course)?

My friend got his VW stuck in second gear and was able to go in through the hole where you add oil with a long screw driver and get it unstuck.
