Once the longhood slam panel and new fender were fitted we needed to longhood the fenders…

Then lots of PRIME /SAND / FILL / REPEAT
Prepping for paint is always about working around the car, fixing, tweaking, etc…

On to a matte white paint this time, vs the old epoxy primer that yellowed quickly. Two days of shooting panels, resanding 3 then re shooting made for a decent result. This was memorial day weekend (sunday/monday) right after my father-in-law passed so 1 week three days before leaving for Ruchlos…

Getting the car painted on memorial day seemed like a big success. But with family coming in town, a funeral and burial the week was even shorter… 2.5 days in the shop mostly working on client work. My dad came and started the reassembly and things started to look decent before i left on Thursday for the memorial…

But 30 mins before i needed to leave, got to go for a proper test drive, car ran well, but really unstable at speed with no downforce on the front and on pulling back into the shop we noticed oil…. Lots of oil…. Ughhh

With no time to dig we pulled what we could apart and i left, defeated that no way it will make the rallye… I’d be back sunday, but how could it all get fixed in time?!?

Im feeling a lot like Chris B with my story, but its fun to see what we did in 2 months.

While away i researched so much on the oil in the air cleaner on a 930 motor and hopefully found a solution in adding a catch can and keeping the oil around 1/2 of the fill range on the stick. So i ordered the parts needed for Saturday delivery so i could hit it fast on Sunday when i was back in the shop. And as a huge blessing my Achtung Kraft brothers, Tony S and leaf green matt offered to come down sunday to knock off the list with me.

Up really early, installed the catch can and hoses, my shop manager had spotlessly cleaned the motor while i was gone so we could find any leaks. Installed and test drove before tony and matt arrived, not a drop, drip or whisper of oil! Success!

So then it was hammer down on the list of to do’s:
- fix front downforce
- install Scheel Mann seats to road test
- get interior buttoned up
- and many more

Monday comes and im more confident that a Wednesday road trip in the 72 is going to happen. So we press on between client work, install new ÄchtungKraft door panels and pockets (after the trip ill never be without pockets again!)
And buttoned up a few more things, bled the brakes, etc. after work i took it for a drive and then wokeup early tuesday am and put 2.5 hrs of driving on it. It ran flawlessly and with the new splitter on the front bumper, i pulled from storage and it fit perfectly, with matts help, it was way more stable.

Dropped it off for an alignment and then started to pack to leave Wednesday am.

Wednesday am comes and Tony, Matt and Keenan are meeting at the shop to roll to West Virginia together. Im feeling good, and realize almost exactly 2 months earlier we pulled the crashed car out of the trailer (thanks for the major push dad!) and started what seemed like an insane journey to get the 72 turbo ready for Ruchlos… as my daughter and i sat down and pulled out of my driveway with others in tow, it was a bit surreal. Hoping all would run well for the next 6 days and 2000+ miles of highways, traffic, twisties, rain, etc.

One small wiring hiccup south of gary, i quickly fixed at lunch, and it ran flawlessly all the way to our buddy MD’s house… though a 6 hour trip became 10+ hours trying to fix a 964 and Keenan’s 996….

We got to the mountains in West Virginia and had a killer time mobbing the roads with 100 other Porsches… we also gave Chris Balich the “dapper” Award since he’s so fancy with his new shiny paint. We stayed with Chris and kelly on the way back, then Matt and i with our daughters made the push home thru chicago… 2000+ miles and im happy to say the car ran flawlessly and had less than 3oz of oil in the catch can, probably a bit of overfill from when we started…

Thanks, its an homage to the cars original viper green color + an 86 turbo = viper/green martini livery

What a journey! Congrats on making it

That Dapper Award was a silly state of affairs.

I was so glad you made it in the 72. It wholly embodies the AK/Ruchlos ethos.
I've almost got Kelly talked into letting me join MD for Vintage next month.
