Dansk exhaust w/ SSI conversion

I have an '82 911SC that I'm converting over to SSI's and a sport Dansk muffler. My question for those who have done it is whether not to go with the muffler that has the fixed tailpipe or the loose tailpipe? Obviously the loose one would need to be welded, but is that necessary? Or does it just give you more flexibility on its final position?

Thanks.

SSI's and a Dansk sport fit my 79Sc perfectly. No welding required.
Don't forget......you'll need some new oil lines also.

Installed this setup on my 79 SC. Its now more responsive and sound great.
Went for the 2-1 70mm Dansk sport muffler. Its not too loud but has a nice scream >4000rpm. The loose 84mm 2-1 drone to much at cruising speed and the 84mm 2-2 is worse. Remember to change the oil lines and be careful at the thermostat - the threads often come off with the steel nut. There is a fix kit available using a longer nut that can catch the remaining threads if this happens. The SSI's are now also made by Dansk and mine needed a little adjustment to fit under the chain houses. (hammer) This may not be necessary on a 82 since there is more clearance using the thick flange type I think you would need for 80-83 SC. The Dansk factory (JP Group) is only one hour away from me, so I did complain - they appriciated the feedback and hopefully quality has improved.

the dansk 2 in single out muffler lines up nicely with the stock rear valance muffler relief cut out with the SSI's in my experience with an early SC. i don't recall the weld on out as an option when i used them back in the day

couple other things if your doing the work yourself

like when installing any new exhaust components I would leave everything somewhat loose until you've got both the SSI's & muffler all bolted up, then return and tighten the heat exchangers, then muffler, then muffler straps.

the new exhaust port gaskets can be squeezed some to bend aiding in keeping them on the studs while you lift to mate the SSI's up.

reassemble with anti-seize and the brass hardware pelican offers.

I learned this as it did the swap back to stock exhaust, oil lines, and all for our california smog testing every two years. I got to where I could go each way in 3 hours, including the air pump and egr valve after id done it a time or two.

oh, the first smog test i actually replumbed the airpump spider manifold to inject air into the heads on the exhaust side. also, get the 02 bung welded in to the SSI's if your car is 80 or newer.

lastly, lastly.... you will be thrilled with the sound and performance increase the SSI's provide on a 3.0L

Cool

I have the SSI's and the Dansk sport muffler in my 78 911 SC. The muffler tail pipe fit the valance cutout perfectly. It is not too loud and develops a gorgeous primal scream from 4000 rpm up. I rebuilt the engine non stock. PMO's, Web cams solex grind, J&E 9.5 to 1 domed pistons, Re-plated nikie cylinders an the SSI's and Dansk.

Cheers,

John

Great, thanks for the replies. I'll probably have it done by my local Porsche indy shop.

Thanks for the feedback on the position of the tailpipe, as I'll be using the stock cutout of the valence.

The only think I haven't decided is if I want to do the 84mm or the 70mm tailpipe. Sounds like there may be a slight drone difference, and mine is a targa.....but its not a DD and only reserved for spirited drives and getaways, so I'm not sure I'd mind hearing the exhaust more (especially since I've disconnected the radio)

Many like the 84mm, but personally I think there is to much resonance in the cabin.
It would be best to catch a ride with a fellow Pelican who has the 84mm setup to get an impression.

Hard to evaluate in a video but I think this German guy has the SSI/70mm setup:

You have what I have for my 77 Targa with 82 SC ROW engine. The special SSI wrench is made for 12mm nuts so it did not work with the 13mm nuts I got from our host. The barrel nuts needed washers since they bottomed out and push the hex tool before they were tight. I used a tiny piece of electrical tape to hold the slippery exhaust gaskets to the flanges. It took me about 3 hours to fit both exchangers to the engine - the left one hits the helper spring on the 915 tranny and both are VERY close to the shocks when the wheels are fully suspended. Replacing the oil lines took the longest so far - and I'm a 911 newbie.

Same here. The special wrench work with the 12mm brass nuts, but my installation kit came with 13mm steel. Hmmm.

I've put a set of swivel sockets on my Christmas wish list.

Claus- does your left heat exchanger interfere with the helper spring? I also had to bend the support tab on the right exchanger since it hit the boss on the engine case.

Another SSI and Dansk Sport 2-1 SC owner here, no drone and it sounds like sex over 4K. Perfect fit with the stock rear valance.

The non-welding version is what I recommend, and works great in almost all cars. I think I put these on my 72 RS clone, but it's been so many years now, I can't recall! I do have a non-stainless sport muffler on there with really long pipes out the back - sounds great! A lot of people tell me that the long pipes look goofy, but I love them!

i just did this 2 weeks ago, i got the dansk stainless steel 1 outlet 70mm sports exhaust, and i think it is droning way too much at 2000-3000 RPM. Maybe it's my targa? maybe it's because i have no insulation mat in the engine compartment, maybe it's my ears, but i'm ditching it in favor of a stock steel 74 exhaust.
At higher RPM's the dansk is not louder than stock by the way. It's just very annoying between 2 and 3K.

Finished my installation today. The Dansk muffler I have is stamped "92.511 el 0010813 Type 92.210 1716". Two inlets, one 70 mm outlet. Car is still up on the stands awaiting rear bumper installation. Car is louder than before but sounds great when revved!

Finished my car today by reinstalling the rear bumper and quarter panel extensions. Filled it up with oil and took it out for a test drive. From inside the car, the new system is just a little bit louder than my old rusty 82 system (not by much IMO). Will report back after I get it out on the highway. The chrome 70mm tip looks so much better than the rusty welded tip.
