Is this what a blown 3.0L motor sounds like?
Guys, could use your help please diagnosing this awful sound that just showed up on my SC last night. Doesn't sound good. Car's running rich now. Clatters on shutdown. Thoughts?

Possibly a noisy valve. How long since last valve adjust? There are a couple of reasons a valve can get noisy all of a sudden. Rocker shaft come loose, etc.

Thanks a Charles I thought that. Valves were done 8k miles or so ago. May try pulling valve covers and checking j to it.

Mine makes a similar clatter even though the valves are properly adjusted though it is strange that it just started all of a sudden. In my case its the valves closing back into their seats according to two mechanics. Probably worth double checking under the valve covers.

Doesn't sound like a knock so I would put my money on valve issue. Pull the valve covers and look for a loose one.

In 1992 I answered an ad for a 1979 ROW 911. Cheap as cheap can be. Like $7k back then. I listened to the engine, the knock was deep. Way deep. Not a clack, a knock. I asked what's the knock? Dude says I don't know, selling it for a friend. ![]() You only have superficial issues.

I cant watch the video but mine sounds horrid when i park it on a hill and have it in the wrong gear which rotates the engine backwards and collapses the chain tensioners. Usually can run for a long time and still clatter but if I shut it down for a bit and start again its fine.

Jim, can you expand on this. What specifically was going on with the distributor and why would it cause a loud ticking noise like this?

Look to see if the fan is hitting the shroud.
If nothing obvious, pull the fan belt and run it for a little bit to see if the noise goes away.

I wasn't able to view the video, but if someone else viewed it and pointed towards the distributor, yes, I had that noise in my 82 SC recently. First indication was to just use my hand and grab the distributor body while the engine was running. I could feel something really crunchy/out of balance. Shut it off and removed the distributor cap. Noticed that the lower parts of the metal contacts for each spark plug wire were chewed up. Pulled the distributor from the engine and realized the fiber washers around the shaft were gone. Done. Worn slap out. The shaft had a LOT of up and down play. I would guess the distributor drive gear was doing a lot of jumping up and down on the gear that drives it. Installed a known good distributor and problem solved.

Get one of these & put it in your toolbox.
You will pinpoint the noise very quickly. Lisle 52500 Mechanic's Stethoscope Price: $15.93

Hi Jason..you could have combination of noises...
Posibly valve adjustment..it also sounds --as loose heads or broken stud... It will be nice to know --any oil leaks..is this video is warm or cold ?If you hear this noise when cold, potentially broken valve spring. If hot engine valve adjustment. Also the video would be better if you would go left to right to locate for us the noise. You chain tensioner on right could be collapsed... Ivan make a better video and to locate the noise use a long screwdriver .One end to your ear(in a fist) and the other strait to the problem spot. |

Thanks all...I went ahead and bought a mechanic's stethoscope (thanks @zelrik911!) and used it to probe the valve covers for loud valves. Cylinder 6 seems to be the loudest and I'm thinking that's where my problem is.
The best place to pinpoint the valve noise I found is actually not on the valve cover itself but on the injector nut for each cylinder...that spot gave a very good indication (without crossover) of how that cylinder's valves sounded compared to the others. The engine is coming out soon, so there will be a full inspection of head studs/valve springs/guides/adjustments/etc. in the near future. I'm going to continue driving it until then, unless enough of you guys tell me I'm crazy to do that. It seems to run just fine, but a little noisy.

Lisle tools are legit. I have gone through about three Harbor Freight stethoscopes. Maybe $6. Always something odd about them.
When they did work there is way better audio than the long screwdriver.

if you have located the noise --take the time and remove the valve cover....and look
I would definitively not drive it.... Ivan yes to screwdriver is not better then the tool but if you do not have the stethoscope it will work...right? Last edited by proporsche; 06-11-2017 at 11:38 PM.. |
