New fuel pump - no crush washers
Received the new fuel pump to replace my leaking one. Was expecting crush washers (are they called sealing rings sometimes?). Took out the old pump and didn't see any there either. I expected two to be bracketing the banjo connection. As I was about to install the new pump, I saw one copper washer lying on the floor - perfect size. Now I suspect I lost the other. I went ahead and installed with just one.
Think this will leak? I can easily get some and install those next weekend. I just thought there might be a chance it won't leak. Haven't pressurized the system until the fumes dissipate - perhaps tomorrow.

where was the old pump leaking from? the banjo fitting with no crush washers? I would say yes it will leak. check local autoparts stores for crush washers, I'm sure there's a generic replacement in a close enough size.
if the 911 is your only transportation, then bike it ti o'riley's :0

Yeah, I think you're right its gone leak. Went to Autozone. They did not have any. Found that strange. Know any store that does carry them? I don't want to waste time driving around. I don't them here on Pelican either.

Update on the fuel pump install
Found some copper gaskets at a local auto parts store. Around the same time I got a response from the customer service at our host here who identified the correct copper gaskets which I had not been able to find in the online store. However, I went with what I had - the locally procured copper gaskets. They leaked like a sieve. The closest I could get in size was 0.5 inch where the perfect fit is 12mm. Thought that would be close enough. Steady leak as soon as I stared the engine and pressurized the system. immediately ordered the correct gaskets from our host. Since the leak was obviously at the banjo connection, i think the correct gaskets will fix it.

In my own experience, the washers are typically in a small plastic bag. Small enough that it can get caught in the folds of the filter's box.
They are definitely needed, as you have found out. If you had tried to re-use the old ones, you'd also find that to be a problem. |

I agree with the frustration of Bosch not including a pair of 50 cent copper sealing washers with a new fuel pump, but should you spend a fraction of the price of a new fuel pump and purchase only the check valve component of the fuel pump, you'll get the 2 thin washers and the 1 thick one in the package.

and inspect your banjo again!!!
sometimes the crush washers are so thin that you oversee them (in bad light condition). so if you don't peel em off and replace the lot with new crush washers, it will leak again.

well, in this case, the washers I put on have a larger outer diameter. I should not miss them. But thanks, I'll be careful.
Parts won't be here for a few days. It will be almost another two weeks before I get her back together.

What is the thick one for?

So I only had a copper washer between the banjo and the check valve, and another at the other side of the check valve. Why three? |

Those copper washers are pretty critical for preventing leaks. I remember trying to re-use copper washers on my Volvo's fuel pump... no good. I sanded down those used washers so they were flat and smooth again so I was able to make them work. It is possible to re-use them, but you have to play around with them first.

Copper washers can be annealed back to normal, heat them until they turn red and let them air cool. Softens them back up like new.

Never got washers with any new pumps. Would be nice. Update tensioner kits have everything except sealing washers for the cam tower banjos. Rather annoying.
