Hi All -
The car was stolen at 5:30 am yesterday morning. I replaced the garage door openers myself, yesterday afternoon. Mike, the car had ski country plates (pic below). Really appreciate the "bumps" on this. Erik, thanks for the PM's and the photoshop! Scott S

I sent this to my son in Colorado Springs so he could forward it to all his gearhead friends. My daughter-in-law is a paramedic there, so they have a lot of contacts.

Scott, I am so sorry for your loss. Fortunately no one was injured and you can get a new car. I’m curious, what is the end game in these situations? Are cars like this stripped, taken for joy rides or sent overseas (or over the border) in a container?

Scott, I live just about 8 blocks away from you (Dahlia and Bayaud), and will absolutely keep my eyes open. My neighbor across the street just had a bicycle stolen from his garage (as he says, largely his fault- he forgot to close the door). Luckily the bike the thief took was only worth about $400, leaving 3 high end race bikes worth over $30,000 and an AMG untouched. It seems that there are more thefts in the neighborhood lately.

So sorry for your loss. Hope the story has a happy ending.
Have you figured out how they were able to open the garage door? Did they gain entry to your house? Were they able to figure out how to fool it into thinking they had the remote? |

Sorry to say, but a car like this is probably already in a shipping container bound for Trinidad and Tobago or Mongolia. Such a late model car like this isn't going to be stolen and driven around here. Your garage was probably staked out and they probably had an idea of what they were doing. Very risky pulling a car like that out of a garage at 5am.

Garage door opener transmissions can be intercepted when the owner pushes the button.
The thieves are likely to be tech savvy and cloned the opener. Pushed the car out and loaded onto a flatbed. When I was PI I reviewed a security camera recorded theft that did just that. No plates or ID on the tow truck. The vehicle was recovered when an alert CHP office saw it a week later. Pulled it over duee no ID on the door.

How about an inside job??The OP just bought the car and only people who sold it knew the car and the location plus could easy clone the key at the shop...just an idea which make sense...i`d go to the origin of the car..where it is from who owned it before...e.t.c.

I wonder how many cars have been stolen after being sold by that "dealer"?

(Gents, I think the OP said he bought the car new, as in 2012.)
This is awful, I worry about my car getting stolen, and of any of y'alls, too. Special place in Hell for thieves. John |

Thieves have increasingly passed up the opener signal hijack in exchange for reaching a long pole with a hook between top of door and seal to snag the manual rope pull release allowing them to lift door by hand. Take measures to move the rope up and out of the way.....

People don't steel what they don't know exists.
Don't newer Porsches have a key with a RFID chip? Some unanswered questions here. I hope we all can learn something when this car is ultimately found.

My garage has wall-mounted jack shaft style openers. No dangling cord. The tech that installed them showed me how easy it is to open a traditional garage door on my old doors using this technique. 5 seconds might be generous. Also the new doors are automatic deadbolts that engage through the rail when the door is closed so it can’t be raised. Still doesn’t explain how they started the car.

Glad you got it back and hopefully it can be put back to original without too many problems.
