Question for everyone:

I have bought and sold over the years (here and other forums) and not once did I need to call anyone, and in fact, hardly ever exchanged numbers. Everything was done by email and PayPal. I have two items for sale and I just get random PM's with a quick question/comment and "call me" with a number. My phone and number is very private to me and I was wondering if this is the way now. I state in my ads that PayPal only is my payment method...

I don't want to be paranoid but the "i'll send a check" even at my age seems dated for selling and buying these days...

Just curious if I need to adjust to the "give me a call" crowd. I mean, I am the one selling...this should be on my terms...correct?

Thanks for any input...
Erik

I agree with you Erik. PM keeps everything within Pelican, and unless the buyer just has some clarifying questions or wants to negotiate, there’s no need to call. Especially if they say to call someone else. If you don’t like giving out your phone number, then text is out as well.
And the check thing is almost always a scam. The scam is to mail you a check that they will add some amount to ($100-$1500) for their ‘shipper’. They then ask (demand) that you give that difference to whomever they have show up to pick up the item. There are variations.
Just stick with PayPal. I’ve used Zelle and Venmo as well. Not confident with CashApp yet.
Best of luck.

Thanks for the response...

Sometimes a person just needs a third party opinion.

Moving forward I will stick to PayPal only and maybe miss a sale or two - but sell and buy with 'confidence'...I guess I will also state to contact me first in the open forum before they PM me. I get PM's now so random and all just throw out their phone numbers...that is where it feels "sketchy" even if the PM's are legitimate questions or comments...

EDIT** I will look into Zelle and Venmo also.

Again, thanks!
Erik

Posted in a FS thread and got a PM from this person. Seems they've been reported already in this thread. Perhaps a ban is in order?

There's a scammer that creates new accounts every day and then late at night posts 2-4 bogus posts in FS or tech forum - they always have an email at the domain china-lutong (dot) com

scammer???

Anyone have any interaction with joe912/62?

He responded to something for I have for sale, then said he paid and that he texted me and I texted back. But he doesnt have my phone number. He never paid anything to me. He also said he emailed me and I responded yet no email either. Is this guy smoking something? Or trying for a scam here. I am thinking he is very confused but not sure.
weird.

here's a novel approach... "Mantop" is also trolling FS posts telling potential buyers to send payment somewhere *other* than the seller.
cute huh ?

Dieselparts - scammers have found a new place to try and build up post history in the Porsche Cars for Sale by Dealer's forum. Amazed that moderators let this happen... also amazed that folks are falling for these poor attempts at scamming...

A few easy steps to not get scammed:

1) Check the known scammer list
2) Check the posters history
3) Reverse image search on Google to see if the items have been posted somewhere else or in another thread
4) Never send via friends and family or send a check unless you 100% known the person and have dealt with them before

Yesterday I posted the need for a windshield Today I have received 7 PM's from the same guy (haund101) directing me to Cahilfrank4@gmail.com where for sure I can get a windshield. Looking at his status, I see that he is BANNED, so I call Pelican. 99% sure this is a scam. SHAME.
